I'm not referring to this trade because the Hawks would never retain 1/2 of Murphy's cap hit given that his cap hit is a bargain for what he brings to the ice. Conversely, Leafs don't need to overpay just to get retention.

That said, the Leafs have maybe 1 and borderline 2 defensive players who people would consider good defenders. Yes, they need a defense shut down pairing and a defense forward line if they really expect to compete. Again, I don't blame the current crop of Leafs fans for not understanding what defense is, it's not your fault your GM doesn't get it either.
