Not making this team into a lottery team

Created by: dgfresh78
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 18, 2020
Published: Aug. 18, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Fun Fact: the goal on this site is not to turn the penguins into a lottery team that will barely be able to hold their heads above water. The notion that Letang or Malkin need to be traded is absolutely hilarious.

This article just seems like a Hornqvist reunion waiting to happen but that’s just me.

Can't see the Flames giving up one of their budding young top 6 forwards for a goalie who lost his starting job because his save % dipped below .900

The hardest of passes from San Jose. That package is just maybe enough for Labanc (although I still decline). Sure as heck is nowhere near enough for Labanc and Simek.

Not super interested in McCann honestly. Fine with taking JJ’s contract for a decent pick (if it was JJ+2nd for 7th or random AHLer that’d be fine), and while I like Tierney he’s available for a 2nd+3rd (seems pretty standard on here and I think it’s accurate value). I just don’t think McCann is worth a 3rd+taking JJ, the value isn’t really there for Ottawa on this one.

Sharks probably accept. I think the Flames are more likely to stick with Talbot tbh. Not sure NSH has the cap to take Hornqvist back

I don't see how it benefits them in the slightest taking on a guy who was scratched and a guy who should've been scratched along with what seems will be a mid 50th overall pick in a weak draft for Cobra.

Did you watch the same series I did? We suffered enough with Ceci, JJ is the lefthanded version of this and somehow even worse.

We only need him for this year to reach the cap floor and be a player on a team that doesn't intend to be good, then we buy him out and it's essentially a league min player for 4 years (cap hit around 1.1, 1.8, 0.8, 0.8 iirc). Not terrible if it lets us acquire another good asset, and he won't be around when the team is good again.

I'd rather just re-sign Borowiecki. Less of a detriment to the team and we still reach the cap floor. Or we poach Russell from EDM.

Even if we re-sign Borowiecki and Hainsey, if we don't overpay them (like they're both worth around 2mil) then we still don't come near the floor. Boedker and Anderson come off the books this year so that's 8mil that'll likely be replaced by close to league min deals on young players. I think if we don't sign anyone major in free agency we're about 6-10 mil shy of the floor, so we might as well go hard this summer and acquire 2 or 3 bad deals (especially ones with 2 or less years left like Smith/Staal from NYR, Beagle/Roussel/Eriksson/Beartschi from VAN, Alzner from MTL, or Rask from MIN).

I can’t imagine living in a world where Kevin Labanc is worth a lottery pick straight up.

*guy who was wrongfully scratched to accommodate veterans who could barely hold their heads above water.

15th overall is plenty fair for Labanc and Simek. Still against trading Labanc, but if this was offered, hard to not consider cashing out.

I feel like it makes sense especially in a draft year in which the sharks could grab someone really good to offset the pain of not having that lottery pick.

OTT declines.

McCann for Tierney is a wash, and one 2nd is nowhere near enough to take 9.75M of JJ

Have you forgotten about Tierney? And Duclair? Sure they won't be paid in the droves, but they will be close to 3 and 4 mill respectively. Along with Connor Brown who could come in at 3.5-4. Chabot's extension also kicks in this year at 8 million... Ottawa will be above the floor with no issues... Dorion might pick up a bad deal to acquire an extra asset, but nothing that will really knock our socks off.

This deal is okay but we don’t want to get rid of both those guys. I’d be okay with replacing Simek with our late second

Even if you gave all 3 of those guys 4mil, and Boro+Hainsey 2mil each (I think at least 2 or 3 of those 5 contracts would be an overpay but whatever), and even with Chabot's raise, once Gaborik goes on LTIR we're still like 3mil from the floor, assuming guys like Formenton, Norris, Batherson, Balcers, Zub, Hogberg all make the team on their less than 1mil deals, which is a reasonable assumption imo. We have so many guys on contracts below a million that are likely to be on the team next year and no bad contracts other than Zaitsev, so even the guys that deserve bigger deals won't raise us to the floor. We maybe get there if we don't put Gaborik on LTIR (is that even a thing we can do? Does he count as a "scratch" in that case? Idk I've just been assuming we throw that on LTIR and forget about it). But yeah they probably won't go too hard after bad deals unfortunately, but with the flat cap and our oodles of room this would be the perfect time to weaponize that cap room and acquire good assets from 2 or 3 desperate teams that got screwed by the flat cap. Maybe they just overpay a free agent to reach the floor and make the competition a little tougher for rookies trying to make the team.

This is pretty good value, but we’d prefer to have a more promising prospect than Almari or a pick.
