Trying to Actually Contend

Description
Taking a stab at upgrading the CBJ to contenders next year. I think they are a scoring forward away from making a run, considering the growth that a lot of the younger players have shown and hopefully continue to show. Going to do this without any UFA/outside RFA singings although I think Cirelli could be an nice piece for the Jackets.

- With Anderson, this could be a bunch of different teams as a player of his ability will draw quite a inquiries this offseason. I think it might take a little bit more than a second rounder to get the job done.

- Love Nuti but I think one of the younger Dmen will have to be sent elsewhere in order to make room for a bigger target. Could also be Harrington that gets sent too.

- As for the big trade, doesn't have to be Laine and not sure this package would seal that deal but I am interested to see what everyone thinks this package from the Jackets could actually land. Maybe another early pick in the deal?

Not sure if anyone bites on Wennberg but I think at the very least the Jackets buy him out. I think he just needs a fresh start but could be a nice addition for someone for pretty cheap.

Winnipeg would never do that trade. The only significant piece they bring in is Korpisalo when they already have the likely vezina winner in net.

Agreed. Korpisalo has value, but him being a main piece in a trade to WPG does not make much sense.

Winnipeg says no. The Jets would prefer quality over quantity.

I get it, I definitely over value having a reliable back-up. Where do you think this deal fits?

Any time I think of value for a star player, I always figure you have to give-up something you don't want to trade to make it a little more considerable to the other teams (their fans).

All the pieces you offered are decent, but nothing really hurts.

What about Bjorkstrand, Savard +? Still have Atkinson for your top 6 if Bjorkstrand is moved.

Just my two cents.

Laine would be nice, but too expensive given the package that would be required.
(Personally I think Elvis is the weaker of the 2 goaltenders and should be traded, and I think time will reveal this...he gets too emotional when things go bad, and it effects his play).

The Jacket's problem was fourfold regarding their playoff failure:

1. They lacked a strong 2C in the playoffs, who could take the load off of Dubois and force teams to match up their lines differently
2. They lacked scoring from their top 6 talent (Texier, Bjorkstrand, Nyquist, Foligno, Jenner, & Dubois ((in the TB series)) ).
(They did get some secondary scoring here and there, but their top 9 scorers were fairly silent).
3. They lacked critical defensive presence at very key times (after the Jackets scored a key goal, as well as early in the 2nd/3rd periods when they gave up a quick goal).
4. Torts did not roll 4 lines, he shortened the bench, with the 4th line getting between 5 - 10 minutes almost nightly.
(especially after a 5 OT game in game #1, it was even more important to roll the lines to keep them fresher as the series went on, which he did not).

For success in 2020-21 season:

They need Anderson to bounce back to 15-20 goals, even with 15-20 goals, he would be a lesser but effective alternative to Laine, who would have double that output.
Originally I thought they would trade Anderson, but now I'm not so sure.
The return they could get for him or use him in a trade is fairly low vs. the benefit he could provide by having a bounce-back year while healthy.

They really need Texier to take the next step forward, as well as Foudy, to really develop and potentially take over the 2C slot.

If they do make a move, they should consider trying to sign one of either Toffoli, Hoffman, Haula, Craig Smith, or Jesper Fast.
One of these players would fill in on 2nd/3rd line with more scoring and good defensive presence, and not break the bank (Toffoli pr Hoffman obviously getting the highest contract of the 5).

Manage other parts like trading Murray, buying out or trading Wennberg (his stock might have gone up slightly with his playoff performance),
trading depth players for higher round picks, if possible, to restock picks and reduce the amount of players hanging out there with no spots available and risk losing them (Gerbe, Shore, Robinson, Lilja, Stenlund, Carlsson, Harrington, Kukan, etc.).

Bjorkstrand is our best two-way forward, with the exception of Dubois. He's not going anywhere unless the return includes a true top-line player with term. The differential in salary (both now and after next season) between him and Laine makes it a tough sell. The front office was already snakebitten with Panarin leaving after two years, so you have to think this is on their minds.

Agreed. I just don't see the incentive from WPG in moving the guy that was supposed to be the face of the franchise, and has/had Rocket Richard upside for a quantity of decent pieces. Doubt ownership or the fanbase would be too thrilled.

I doubt a Laine to Clb trade works without a Bjorkstrand or equivalent piece being involved.

Just giving my opinion to OP.

And I agree with you. Which is why I don't see it happening, because Laine (like Bjorkstrand) would expire at the same time that we'd be trying to extend Jones and Werenski, and the squeeze would be immense. I think we're most likely to set our sights a touch lower and find a 2C or at least a winger with term and less perceived value than Laine (Boeser?).

Did not look at long term implications. Yeah, CLB definitely can not have another star player due a contract at the same time as Jones and Werenski, that could/would be a disaster.

Columbus doesn’t have the players to offer WPG for Laine. They start with a top 6 wing to replace Laine and a 2nd line center. Columbus can’t afford to move Bjorkstrand and we don’t have a 2nd line center to make the trade work.

I like a little fire in my goalie and I personally like Elvis a little more. Both will be really good NHL goalies though. If I remember correctly to the beginning of the season (700 months ago), Korpi had some stick smashing reactions too after some tough breaks. I think the emotion is good in spots and Manny/Torts can help them get it under control.

Tex looked great in the bubble and hopefully he continues to take a step forward next season. Foudy looked good too and showed confidence on the puck in stretches. I think he can grow into that 2C role and when he does, it will be a big boost for the team.

I'm guessing that Anderson won't want to resign here this offseason. I hope he does and can get back to where he was before his injury, but if he wants to go elsewhere, hopefully we can get a pick or two back.

Not sure what the value of Murray is but considering his injury history, I can't see too many teams taking a chance on him unless they can get him for cheap. Not sure it is worth it for the Jackets at the point. Wennberg is another one too, with his lack of consistency and contract, its going to be tough to find a trade partner. Retaining some of his salary might not be worth it compared to buying him out.

Thanks for the input!

Winnepeg isn’t trading their star winger for a goalie they already have. Try again..
