Murphy>Kap
I'm trying to be nice here. GM's get desperate and hold on too long to good players. Just because one GM is desperate and willing to move heaven and earth to stay competitive doesn't mean the whole NHL has decided all players value has skyrocketed.
To get a Desperate price you need a Desperate GM. The pens GM knew that the Leafs had Kappy, he's a great asset and they had no reason to move him. That means he knew he would have to overpay and did it willingly. I've said repeatedly on here Kappanen would require an overpay and he did.
That means in order to get an overpay you need to meet conditions. 1) Do you have a talented player with top 6 potential but not guaranteed or just a top 6 guy. 2) Do you have a spot for him that may not be perfect but means you don't need to move him and is he happy in that spot? 3) Things can be tight but you can't be screwed for cap space.
If all those things are true then you need a GM who wants that specific player and what he offers and will do anything to get it.
The Leafs has plenty of people asking for a variety of talent on the team. They absolutely didn't have to move Kappy. They even could have made the current roster work with a few signings.
You guys have no signed goaltending and 5 roster RFA's to sign with only 7.35 million before you are into LTIR territory. Seabrook, it's been reported will be back for training camp. If shaw is done that's 3.9 million in LTIR. Considering you need a starting goaltender and either resign Subban or get a backup plus sign 4 RFAs Your cap situation is pretty dire.
