Hawks also don't need another center. Already wonder what's going on with Strome as it is.

I think he is worth a second, just not that second, which is almost a first.

I couldn't agree more it's basically first round pick for Dermott. Is there a player Toronto would give up that you would trade the #32OA for?

Just because the Pens payed a lot for Kapanen does not mean that the whole market changed

Murphy>Kap

I'm trying to be nice here. GM's get desperate and hold on too long to good players. Just because one GM is desperate and willing to move heaven and earth to stay competitive doesn't mean the whole NHL has decided all players value has skyrocketed.
To get a Desperate price you need a Desperate GM. The pens GM knew that the Leafs had Kappy, he's a great asset and they had no reason to move him. That means he knew he would have to overpay and did it willingly. I've said repeatedly on here Kappanen would require an overpay and he did.
That means in order to get an overpay you need to meet conditions. 1) Do you have a talented player with top 6 potential but not guaranteed or just a top 6 guy. 2) Do you have a spot for him that may not be perfect but means you don't need to move him and is he happy in that spot? 3) Things can be tight but you can't be screwed for cap space.
If all those things are true then you need a GM who wants that specific player and what he offers and will do anything to get it.
The Leafs has plenty of people asking for a variety of talent on the team. They absolutely didn't have to move Kappy. They even could have made the current roster work with a few signings.

You guys have no signed goaltending and 5 roster RFA's to sign with only 7.35 million before you are into LTIR territory. Seabrook, it's been reported will be back for training camp. If shaw is done that's 3.9 million in LTIR. Considering you need a starting goaltender and either resign Subban or get a backup plus sign 4 RFAs Your cap situation is pretty dire.

Your underestimating Dermott's ability. He's not great on the right, granted. But then He's not a RHD as much as everyone wants him to be.

Hawks have zero interest in Kerfoot and even if they did, he and a 4th don’t get you Murphy and it’s not close.

Pretty bad analysis of the Hawks situation, which tells me is predicated on the fact that you didn’t even bothering peeling back one layer to see who the RFAs are and what easy non trade moves need to happen. There are only two RFAs that need to be signed and that is Kubalik and Strome. Smith, almost a foregone conclusion, will be bought out saving around $2M against these cap. Maatta may also be bought out, saving over $3.5M against the cap. Both players are replaced by ELC players that certainly can fill their shoes on the ice. That’s roughly $4M added so $12M in cap space. Hawks are fine and I’d argue the Leafs were in worse shape then the Hawks knowing they HAD TO make a trade to be compliant; the Hawks don’t have that pressure. Your basis of why Kap is worth as much as they got and suggesting Murphy is not, would be incorrect as such as it pertains to cap situations.

We don’t need RHD but he’s still not worth a pick that’s basically a late 1st. If you value him that highly than keep him

No such thing as basically a late first. People attacked me because they could draft a McDavid at 19th overall. This is a deep draft granted but after about 15th overall (in almost every draft) the quality of players really starts to drop off. After that, if you have someone or not is iffy. The truth is that once the draft begins there are no rounds. That's only a tool for creating a cutoff for pick trades. That's it's exclusive purpose. That being said the way your thinking is basically how GM's evaluate their position on picks. Where do I think that pick is going to land? What player are we looking at drafting in that spot and what do we think we are going to get? Is this player worth giving that shot up? Also taking into account that anything later than 15th is a 50/50 shot or so at being a player. Into the later picks of the first round, it really drops off. Dermott is a really good D-man. That's why so many Leafs fans hate seeing trades for him but he doesn't really have a fit here. And As I said, he's a LHD. People just want him to work out on the right and he doesn't.

Now if your team needs a good LHD, (Again, he's not a RHD, that's the problem) That's another argument.
