Minor Tinkering and Belief in Futures

Created by: benjgc
Team: 2020-21 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 28, 2020
Published: Aug. 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the cost of trading for a 2C like Domi or Monahan is as high as CF users seem to believe it to be, I think the Jackets are better served retooling a bit, making nice with Josh Anderson, and securing some pieces and picks for the future while shedding unnecessary assets and gaining flexibility for the trade deadline. Also assuming that they sign a bunch of two-way contracts to fill out Cleveland's roster.

Please let me know if any of this is way off.

Trades
1.
CBJ
  1. Davidsson, Marcus [Reserve List]
  2. Mittelstadt, Casey [RFA Rights]
BUF
  1. Kukan, Dean
  2. Wennberg, Alexander
Additional Details:
Allowing Buffalo to upgrade down the middle and giving them a solid and inexpensive D while taking back a couple of C prospects who don't seem to have a huge future with Buffalo.
2.
CBJ
  1. 2020 7th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Any team will do here; picked Detroit because they may want to let Seider and McIsaac marinate longer in the minors.
3.
CBJ
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (EDM)
CGY
  1. Kivlenieks, Matiss
  2. Nutivaara, Markus
Additional Details:
Nuti can play either side, and allows Treliving to have some flexibility in dealing with his UFA D situation while not blocking the future. Kivlenieks is a capable and cheap backup for Rittich (I'm assuming Calgary doesn't make a big move for a goalie in this scenario).

I think Buffalo declines Wennberg has a pretty high cap hit who doesn’t put up a lot of points.
And Mittlestadt isn’t the right player for Torts system he’s soft and doesn’t really like to backcheck or play any defense.

I’d rather see Robinson in the lineup rather than Nash.

What would work instead of that? Something like one of the two Cs plus a 2nd? I chose Buffalo because I've seen a few Buffalo ACGMs with interest in Wennberg.

Retention of half Wennberg’s contract.

Don't think that works for Columbus, unless they put Dubi on LTIR right away and have zero flexibility for the TDL, which I don't see happening.

I don’t either, but nobody pays a 3rd line center $5 million.

Wennberg and Korpisalo for one of the C and Hutton. Saves Columbus 4.9 mil. Sabres buyout Wennberg pretty cheaply...

Right? I feel like that's a win for both sides. Columbus gets to move out some $ while dealing from strength, and Calgary gets two useful pieces.

Don't see that as a move Columbus would make; we can just buy out Wennberg ourselves for almost as much in savings. Neither of Elvis/Korpi are going anywhere unless Jarmo gets blown away.

you've seen interest in wennberg as a low cost to acquire as a placeholder middle 6 center.

Like I said, I went with you guys because I've seen plenty of Buffalo ACGMs with interest in Wennberg. If the ask is too high, I'd really appreciate you letting me know what you think would be fair. Obviously, I don't know Buffalo's system as well as I do Columbus's prospect pool.

wennberg for a 4th, or for a 2nd with 1.5 million retained

Don't think a 4th would be enough for Jarmo to say yes. And maybe he'd do $1M retained, since that more than doubles what his cap hit would be if we buy him out ourselves.

Calgary probably won't make a move for a goalie unless they're a #1. Matiss really wouldn't be a massive upgrade compared to our AHL guys in Gillies and Zaigdulin.

I was assuming they roll with Rittich as their #1. If they wanted Korpi or Elvis, that would probably only be possible if we send them as part of a package that got Monahan, Gaudreau or Lindholm in return.

I dont think the Sabres deal is that bad but its sort of a why bother? Like Wennberg is solid defensively, I get that, but the Sabres can just re-sign Larsson or someone similar in free agency. The market doesn't overprice defensive talent, which makes wennberg at 5 mil worse value than some of the other examples like Gourde or Pageau

That's fair! Like I said, if there's a fit, great! If not, eh. Would Riley Nash be a better fit? Only $2.75M cap hit, responsible at both ends.
