That's been my opinion ever since I looked at the tax consequences. So that's the double edge part of the blade. It attracted them there and got most to sign team-friendly deals; but now, it will prevent them form going elsewhere too.
Overall this seems to be coming from a "Money buys happiness" way of thinking.
There's been numbers of players to turn down loads of money because they were unhappy, were done in for, or would sign in different teams at less money out of preference.
- Berglund retiring from the NHL, leaving behind millions because he no longer enjoyed the game.
- Byfuglien no longer enjoyed the consequences of the game
- Tavares, Panarin both turning down larger offers to play in their city of choice.
To think money is the end all factor overall just isn't justifiable. These players make millions as is, but if they aren't happy (which we just don't know), who is to say they won't rejuvenate it at a slight % impact to their revenue?
So, since we know so little, I'm taking the open minded route that they might be willing to improve their quality of life (more ice time, more joy for the game, more responsibility, home town play) somewhere else. May as well do it when you have options rather than wait for a NTC to expire when you're out of options.
