That will screw our cap picture, because whatever we OS will be stupidly high. Rather trade him, sign him at a bridge and live happily ever after.

No way these players waive their NMC and pay over a million more in taxes over the course of their remaining contracts.

Edit: Gourde would pay $786,662 more in taxes per year for the next 5 years or 3.933M more in taxes....not going to happen. See for yourself: https://www.capfriendly.com/income-tax-calculator/yanni-gourde

Tyler Johnson would pay $316,584 more per year for 4 years meaning 1.266M...see for yourself: https://www.capfriendly.com/income-tax-calculator/tyler-johnson

Can we ever have one tampa AGM where somebody doesn't say this. There's plenty of guys who care more about actually playing than the money they are getting. We can't read their minds.

3.933M more in taxes over the contract...it doesn't take a mind-reader

maybe tampa fans should use the tools on this website to come up with realistic options that "prices in these factors."

1. I'm not even a tampa an
2. It's happened before, why can't it happen again. Gourde is FROM Quebec...
3. Why should mere speculation prevent anyone from making trades on here?

I can think of 3.933M reasons.

3.933M is a lot of jet trips to visit back home. Could even fly private with that kind of savings....

Players negotiate these NMC for this very reason when they agree to below market deals in tax advantageous areas...they are not going to let them sit idle and cost themselves 3.933M dollars.

I don’t know what pick it would take but I just don’t think it makes sense. We might look at trading Nilsson at half retained but that’s still 1.3mil. We just really don’t need an old, career backup on an expiring contract more than we need a young goalie showing promise.

EDIT: You can probably dump McBackup for a pick and snag Dell or Brossoit for league min

Money isn’t everything for a tone of people. Not saying he waives but he’ll go back home, be a French star for the Canadiens. Also you sign nvm so that you decide where you’ll go if traded. Sure 800k is a good amount of coin, but for better minutes/ production and you can go home, why not

It's not just 800k...it's 800k per year for the next 5 years....and that doesn't even get into how players want to play in these warm weather cities...and face it Tampa has a better shot at the Cup than Montreal over the next couple years anyways.

edit: and tampa is going to have to open up more minutes when they jettison players that they can actually move and not be blocked by these NMC's.

You're talking like an expert and it is rather funny. Quit taking a casual website so seriously. You have no clue what anyone will do, nor do I. This is a pretty darn close representation of convincing him to waive though. Ice time. Home team. French star. Chance to become more than he already is. Either that or he can work himself into buyout territory on TB or never get a good contract after this. How's that for money?

In a buyout he gets $16,466,667 and loses $8,233,333. There's a tool on this website for that too: https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-calculator/yanni-gourde I am pretty sure he can cobble together another 5 years for more than 8.233M. That's 3rd/4th line money and he's shown he can do that easily. 16.47M he's pretty set for life even before his next contract.

Thanks for the advice on what I should do...but I decline your offer. But the bright side is that it doesn't cost me 3.933M in more taxes.

Does that mean Cernak, Cirelli and Sergachev will sign deals cheaper in TB?? If Montreal offers 6.5 mil per year for Sergachev TB would have to offer ~5 mil per year for the same after tax income....

I don't think Tampa should push Gourde to waive anyway. He has shown his worth near the end of vfc the season and in the playoffs so far. Killorn will net a stronger return, and Tampa will likely bridge both Cirelli and Serg a bit cheaper than 4.75 and 5. Not a bad lineup though.

That's been my opinion ever since I looked at the tax consequences. So that's the double edge part of the blade. It attracted them there and got most to sign team-friendly deals; but now, it will prevent them form going elsewhere too.

Overall this seems to be coming from a "Money buys happiness" way of thinking.

There's been numbers of players to turn down loads of money because they were unhappy, were done in for, or would sign in different teams at less money out of preference.
- Berglund retiring from the NHL, leaving behind millions because he no longer enjoyed the game.
- Byfuglien no longer enjoyed the consequences of the game
- Tavares, Panarin both turning down larger offers to play in their city of choice.

To think money is the end all factor overall just isn't justifiable. These players make millions as is, but if they aren't happy (which we just don't know), who is to say they won't rejuvenate it at a slight % impact to their revenue?

So, since we know so little, I'm taking the open minded route that they might be willing to improve their quality of life (more ice time, more joy for the game, more responsibility, home town play) somewhere else. May as well do it when you have options rather than wait for a NTC to expire when you're out of options.

I agree. I believe Johnson will be asked as it allows him to have considerable control over his next destination. If he stays, he likely sees a much reduced role next year and then must take his chances with two-thirds of the league. Tampa likely gets a mediocre return for him now, but the ability to re-sign potentially all three rfas(and definitely Serg and Cirelli) is well worth it.
