Brutally honest opinion on the Winnipeg Hellebuyck

Description
Might as well rename the team to the Winnipeg Hellebuyck, because he put them on his back. They would have been a bottom 5 team in the league without him.

This team cant contend with Connor and Schiefele on the same line. Both guys are awful defenders and their blueline is one of the worst in the NHL.

Here are some stats for context

There are only 3 teams in the NHL that have 2 separate players (Schiefele being dead last and Kyle Connor being 6th last) that are bottom 10 in Expected Defensive Goals Above Replacement which is one of the best defensive stats out there. Laine who is their other linemate isnt much better being the 39th worst defender according to xDEF GAR.

3 out of their 6 regular defensemen (DeMelo, Kulikov and Pionk) have a positive xDEF GAR rating while the rest (Morrisey, Beaulieu, Poolman) are all negatives. You cant have half of your blueline be a a below replacement level defender.

The loss of Trouba, Byfuglien and Myers really hurt the team, but Myers and Trouba both got massively overpaid and neither guy had a positive xDEF GAR rating anyways.

The 2nd line centre is another issue. They tried Stastny and Hayes, both guys left in free agency, So I would expect them to find a better long term solution

If Im the Jets, I would trade Connor and/or Laine for a good defensive defenseman and a geood 2C (in 2 separate trades of course)

ALSO PLEASE DO NOT MOVE EHLERS. hes got the least amount of value out of the 4 forwards and hes arguably the best

Also dont bank on Hellebuyck becoming a cememt wall for an entire season. Please get this man a good backup to give him some rest

Im planning on turning this into a series. So lmk in the comments what team I should talk about next

I like your assessment and agree with pretty much all of it so why not go ahead and do the Habs.

100% agree dude. The only untouchables on the roster as of now is Hellebuyck, Ehlers, Scheifele, and Copp as well in my opinion. Number 1 on the list should be a new coach because Paul doesn't know how to get the best from his players which is evident because he has the most losses of all time. Don't really know why Chevy and the Jets like him so much...

Meh, Helly is overrated, he's not a big save when you really need it goalie.

Yeah they have needs elsewhere but they'll lose value on trading those wingers, should fill holes through free agency or by trying to get some decent players on the cheap from cap strapped teams.

People can cling to fancy stats all you want but the Jets offense was carried by 5 guys this season two of who were Laine and Connor playing massive parts in that offense, they're both good at doing the hardest thing in the NHL, scoring goals, trading those goals away would just have people saying 'the Jets just don't have any goal scorers'.

There's no quick fix to the mess Chevy created for himself, trading any on Laine, Ehlers or Connor won't help clean up the mess it'll just create a bigger mess elsewhere.

They are paying 13,3 million dollars to 2 of the worst defenders in the NHL

and people say they need defense. maybe try splitting up a line thats awful defensively

When the coach is run by the captain that's the result,
Wheeler gets what he wants and he wants to play with Scheifele and Connor, these are the results.

Also which leads to my point that trading Ehlers and Laine for a center and D would just leave the new 2C with insufficient wingers to make a difference cause Wheeler and Connor won't be taken off of Scheifele's wing so overall they're pretty much in the same spot just with different holes to fill.

Not trying to be a d!CK but that's just the reality with Maurice as a coach of the Winnipeg Hellebuyck as you call them.. Lol

I specifically said they shouldnt trade Ehlers since hes got the least amount of value and hes better than Laine and Connor. They would be selling low on him anyways

I would fire Maurice and hire a Gallant, Laviolette or maybe Babcock

I know you didn't but it's Laine and Ehlers on the TSN list that everyone is in a tizzy over and I just don't see them trading Connor but personally if I was forced to trade one of the three it'd be Connor.

Gallant would be my choice, I think he could get the most out of this group but unfortunately I don't see Maurice going anywhere, I think the ownership really likes Maurice, he talks a good game which has them fooled into believing his methods are going to get them to where they want to go.

Think I'd pass on Laviolette, he underachieved with a Preds team that was pretty solid top to bottom, don't have time for Babcock.

Yea, I saw the trade bait, but when is that ever right?

Kreider was 1st on their deadline trade bait board and he never went anywhere

Well a guy who's on TSN radio in Winnipeg did some number crunching of guys who were on the trade bait list in the past few years and quite a few were traded within two years following being on that list, no guarantee of anything obviously but not a good sign if you're a Jets fan who's favorite player is Ehlers or Laine... frown
