He might, this is the first time gms have known what the salary cap will be for three years. If an offer sheet is to rich they may have no choice not to match. The Islanders have 28.5 million tide up in five players with full ntc. Another 11.5 in ladd and boychuck who are untradeable.
After marching Barzel, signing pullock and Devan Toews. Need to move
Leddy
Clutterbuck
Cizikas
Komorov
which is doable but thats if they don't have an internal cap less then 81.5. Which I doubt as there owners are rich but not billionaire rich.
there was an article I read yesterday, about how contracts will no longer be front loaded, becasue all teams are cash poor due to the covid shutdowns.
The NHL has the right to shut down or shorten the season, AND Pro-rate salaries under Paragraph 17, BUT Escrow is fixed at an all time high of 20% of the salary amount, not paid, but lower down to 6% in Y4 and 5 respectively.
So, most contracts for Barzal, won't pay front loaded, or even $10M in season 1 or 2, because a shortened season means he could earn $10M, and only bring home $5M because it's pro-rated, and from that $5M he'd have $2M in escrow and only $3M pre-tax.
the point being, Internal cap won't be an issue as both player and team want less salary for years 1 through 3.
now it's just cap mgmt with those players mentioned... and that will definitely be doable to keep Barzal.
