Potentially something like what the Penguins did with Pettersson a couple seasons ago.
QO type signing then an extension for more $. After a 2+ month delay, in September, Pettersson signed his QO of $874,175. Then in January he signed a 5yr $20,125,875 ($4,125,875 AAV) extension. Odd numbers right? Not if you combine the QO and the extension which then totaled a round $21,000,000.
It was a way to get around cap problems that first year. The Caps are currently 2 people shy of a normal roster, but $1M over the cap.
