Toronto won’t do that
They’ll need to pay Hyman soon

Sharks management is seemingly high on Leonard making it to the roster with a good camp and being an impact player. If that happens but he turns out not to be, or at least not be yet, can swap in guys like Gregor/Suo there as needed to try and see if a young guy is capable of top-6 quality.

Kane's half-retained at 3.5mil in this proposal so it's the same thing cap-wise for TOR since Kerfoot's also 3.5mil.

So the retention is almost 18M, what is that worth? Kane is a better player than Kerfoot by far. Neither are over paid. The only reason SJ retains is for Toronto to have cap space. So what’s the price of the skill difference and 18M of retention? 2 1sts almost seems like underpaying to me

It's not like Kerfoot's valueless either. Kane is a 50 point winger with controversial reputation. I don't see a point for wasting that much for a player like that, nor I see a reason for SJ to retain that much for that long time.

The trade isn’t a good idea I agree. The poster was just trying to make it work and this is realistically the answer. Kane is controversial for sure but also brings the edge and sandpaper that the leafs are looking for. Thornton and Simmonds aren’t exactly going to fill those needs. It’s not a bad idea given that Toronto’s window is rapidly closing.
