No thanks, Detroit's not looking at adding nearly $11 million to their payroll over the next 5 seasons.

With the front loaded contract, it will only be $8mil in real cash

Bert brings a toughness the Leafs need, also it frees up money for Cerenak and to pay Hyman next year.

You don't during a rebuild, Yzerman is building the team through the draft. Why would he want a nearly $11 million Mitch Marner when we're nowhere near contending. Adding expensive players when a team is nowhere near competing makes absolutely zero sense.

If the Leafs want cap space...maybe this type of Marner trade is the only way possible.
Don't you think it an impractical fantasy that the cap strapped Leafs can outbid other teams for Cernak when it only costs a 2nd rounder or a little more on an offer sheet?

I disagree, you add talent when it is available or you miss out.

Still nearly a $11 million cap hit for 5 more seasons, Yzerman already said that he wants cap flexibility going forward.

I love Bert but I can’t see why Detroit doesn’t do this.

Seems like a reasonable deal for both sides. Detroit gets top end talent and Toronto gets some solid depth, prospect and picks.

The leafs dont need toughness at the expense of elite skill. That would be stupid. And you dont move elite skill to make cap room for a guy who would be your 4th best defender. And even if the leafs were looking to move marner for some cap room, they arnt taking a hair cut on a marner trade to make it work, detroit would have to add a significant piece to the deal to make the leafs consider it

Because he makes 11M a year and isn't worth that price. Only way this is a yes is if Toronto eats 2-3M a year and puts him closer to his value

This is a pass, unless leafs eat 2-3M of that contact, we aren't taking 11M a year when we just drafted and upgrade to marner who is on an elc

Real life cash means nothing to wings, they aren't a small market club. It's about the cap hit. Leafs will have to eat 2-3M of that cap hit to make it happen

The hope is Raymond turns into Marner but that is a lofty expectation.

That is why it is 2 2nd's instead of 2 1st's that Marner would be worth if he was on a more reasonable contract. This is already a big compromise on the part of the Leafs for a 90 point player. 90 point players do not grow on trees.

He is marner with a better shot, that's what every scouting report says on him. Some of his snipes so far this year looks good. Well see, it's def too early to tell if he becomes marner, but like the comparison
