Hi! I'd like to get your opinion on my Seattle Expansion draft. I on my own, decided who to protect (7 forwards, 3 defense, and a goalie) based on their abilities, contract, age, and value. I also excluded rookies just because. Do you think this a job well done? Also, shout out to Corwin and the Bardown team on TSN for introducing me to ArmChair Gm in one of their videos. Thanks!

Bjugstad would be a wasted pick. He'll be a UFA like 2 weeks after the draft. Soucy or Greenway are better picks from MN, unless you really wanted Talbot (I'm 90% sure Kahkonen will be the protected goalie as it stands currently).

Veleno (Detroit) is exempt. Kreider (NYR) has a NMC. You also have ~8 UFAs.

Hello and welcome. =)

You could have just put this in the description box (meant as a tip). You're new so you'll be way off on a lot of trades, all of us were in the same boat at some point (and some still are). Have fun and don't take criticism personally, some of the replies can be pretty harsh (I'm guilty of that also). Most of the time it's because people are passionate about their teams, there are trolls but that'll happen with any forum.

If you're unsure about something ask or make a note of it in the description, title, or comments box with trades.

Welcome to CapFriendly!

Toronto will be protecting Brodie and Anaheim will be protecting Terry. You'll get somebody like Christian Djoos or Jacob Larsson from us, or even Josh Manson.

The easiest way to look at who will be exempt from the expansion draft is to go to the "Interactive" tab and then use the "Seattle Expansion Draft Simulator" feature.

Really nice, as is usually the case with you Minnesota guys!

@LucasVollmer09 : I've always found the Minnesota Wild fans on CapFriendly to be uniformly courteous and also pretty well informed.

- Kreider has to be protected due to the NMC rules and I doubt he waives
- Vlasic also has to be protected unless he waives
- Brodie will be very likely be protected (he has a NTC next year but he will still probably be protected)
- Stastny, Baertschi, Tatar, Coleman, Bjugstad, Hinostroza, Hjalmarsson, and McCabe are all UFA's less than a week after the selection, unlikely they are selected.
- Merzlikins is exempt and cant be selected, some of the other RFA's here are also exempt I believe
- Giordano will be 38 with only 1 year remaining on his contract, he is a poor target. Carter turning 37 is in a similar situation

There is a feature on CapFriendly that will help you do this much easier since it will show you who is available for selection. https://www.capfriendly.com/expansion-draft/seattle

Brodie has his first year as a NMC so he won't be exposed to Seattle. Chances of him waiving it at the draft are very low.

His nmc expires during the draft as it ends in the off-season so he doesn't need to waive it. Dubas will most likely protect him unless he does not do well

Not how that works. The expansion draft is considered part of the 2020-21 season. His NMC does in fact last through the draft and into the off season. New seasons technically start July 1st in a normal seasonal calendar and not when the Stanley Cup ends. Brodie would in fact need to waive his NMC to be eligible for the draft and that is the reason for the existence of the 1 year NMCs in a lot of contracts during the 20-21 season including Muzzin and Brodie.

You can see evidence of this in why guys like Sandin and Liljegren (and a whole boatload of other ELCs) don't need protection slots even though 20-21 is their 2nd professional season.

Welcome, it is a bit of a addictive site fair warning. My only advice on expansion would be to try to think up a Francis plan, coming from Carolina, probably a tandem goalie scenario, abundance of defenseman under 25ish and with a hope of team friendly deals, and strength up the middle with some vets on the wings. Expansion is tough to predict, I’m guessing the goal is an abundance of draftpicks over nothing else, it will also be interesting with a possible internal budget or a free spender. Not sure on the guaranteed contracts beyond 3 years , every gm seems to wrattle off the 5 year plan. Welcome sorry for the lengthy run on sentence lol

Rookies and 2nd year’s players are excluded. They have to have played 3 years in the NHL to be eligible to be drafted if left unprotected. Good luck man!! I had to google the rules too.

HockeyTownUSA69 i didn't put them in because it makes it even harder and this is planned for 2021. I should have made it that but I thought this would be easier with the UFA's and stuff

So a couple days later, I simmed game by game on whatifsports.com with my team. My team went 500 and snuck in as the 8 seed. I simmed the 2020 year so it was only around 65 games. We went 33-32. While this was going on, I kept stats on the players as far as goals, assists, and points. The part that amazed me was that Chris Kreider had 34 goals and 56 points. Also, Ekhom had 17 goals, 47 points somehow. The biggest part was that Eberle had 27 goals, 64 assists, for 97 POINTS!!! He would have been 6th in the scoring list in 2020. YES JORDAN EBERLE. But they lost in 7 to the Flyers in the First Round.
