Why stop there? If Toronto traded Nylander for Donato, they'd save more than $5 million.

Probably need to add a bit for Nylander. It's close, but the Leafs value him a lot. I think it's close though.

How does this trade fill a need for the Leafs? Saving 1 mil in cap for this year and gaining a 3rd rounder is not worth giving up Nylander who is better and has term on his contract.

No, it's NOT close. Nylander = 0.72 ppg; Meier, 0.60 ppg. Meier is owed $20 million over the next 3 years, while Nylander is owed $24 million over 4, so Nylander is actually cheaper.

I very highly doubt that the Leafs or the Sharks care at all about the salary difference between the two. Meier is about $1M< cheaper than Nylander in caphit, and while that might be a bit of a non-factor, that's the thing that really matters. I don't think the billionaires running each organization are particularly concerned with a $667k difference in money owed per year on average.

Both players have a very similar RAPM chart with Meier actually being a much stronger asset then Nylander on the PP. In two seasons where Meier played on a competitive Sharks squad (2018-19) and a garbage one (2019-20), he averaged 0.78 PPG. Nylander in the same period of time with two very good Maple Leafs teams averaged 0.70 PPG, suggesting Meier has been the better player over the last two seasons taking into account he was playing with a trash team this year.

You don't have to like it, in fact, I can't say I'd blame blame you if that's the case, but Nylander for Meier and a 3rd is way more than close enough.

This trade proposal is actually slightly off. A Nylander/Meier swap would be more fair, take the 3rd out. TOR should do it bc Meier's that physically dominating player they could use to get to the gritty areas and still has tremendous vision and a fantastic shot. The ONLY reason I'd consider this deal as a Sharks fan is bc SJ needs RWers and Nylander's similarly fantastic with a different pure goal-scoring skillset which the Sharks can afford to get rid of the physicality of Meier bc of 1) having Kane fill that role and 2) LWers like Leonard, Dahlen who can fill it from next season and beyond.
