cause of covid no one is signing a longer term contracts

Right...like Krug, Pietro, Hintz, Weegar, etc...they only got one or 2 year deals....If you are going to do signings, make them real...unless you want to troll

imo I view advanced stats as a tiebreaker. In this case, Marner is so astronomically better (and younger too) that they basically don't matter

marner is a top 10 winger, maybe soon to be a top 5 winger. Bjorkstrand is a decent lil guy who could play on the second line, throw some hits, pop in 20-25 goals, 40-50 points - a great player no doubt, on a great contract - but he's not a top 10 winger

Marner is not that far ahead of bjorkstrand and the underlying numbers back that up. You also have to take into account that Marner plays with much better players. At even strength bjorkstrand is the better player. Marners numbers on the PP gives him the edge overall but it’s very small.

Bjorkstrand is already a 1st line caliber winger. He’s an elite goal scorer and he’s elite defensively.

Advanced stats should be used as a supplementary source of info. The stats say Valeri Nichushin is sugnificantly better than barzal but I bet you wouldn’t do that trade.

Nichushkin is bound to regress next season. He doesn’t put up points and he’s awful on the powerplay, but he was arguably the best defensive forward in the league this season while being average offensively. There’s an argument that nichushkin was more valuable to the avalanche last season than barzal was to the isles. Doesn’t mean hes better than barzal.

That’s not the point, I know he will regress. You can’t say bjorkstrand is comparable to marner just because the advanced stats say so. I wouldn’t trade marner for something like Bjork and a first because they’re not close in value. You wouldn’t trade barzal for bjork and a first becaue barzal is clearly better even though the advanced stats disagree.

It’s not just the advanced stats. The past two seasons he’s been above the 95th percentile in goals per 60 min. He scores goals at an elite rate on a defensive minded team. Add to that he’s an elite defensive forward, what else does he have to do to be considered a 1st line player?

I wouldn’t trade barzal for bjorkstrand because it’s a lot harder to find an elite C than an elite winger - but they are close in impact the last TWO seasons.

Marner is only slightly better than bjorkstrand and CBJ will be able to sign bjorkstrand for 5-6 mill. Bad trade for CBJ

I find marner overrated by leafs fans but cmon, he blows bjorkstand out of the water

He is better than bjorkstrand, not by much though. Bjorkstrand was on pace for 35 goals, 60 pts this season playing 2nd line minutes. The past two seasons he’s been above 95th percentile in G/60 minutes. If he would have played on the 1st line all season he would have been on pace for over 40 goals.

Bjorkstand is a 60 point player, marner is a 90+ point player. They are not the same. Bjorkstand won’t even score 40 goals lol

Barrel is literally a legit 1C playing in a defensive trotz system. Nichuskin is a 3rd 4th liner. How can you seriously even compare them??

He was on pace for 35 goals this season and the last two seasons he scored at a rate better than 95% of the league. It’s not even an advanced stat - do the math.

Nichushkin was the best defensive forward in the league this season. He provided more value to the avalanche this season than barzal provided to the isles. Doesn’t mean he’s better than barzal, nichushkin will regress. It’s one season.

He is UNCOMPARABLE to nichuskin. Barzel is an elite Centre, nichuskin is a 3rd liner. I’m not gonna waste my time debating something so ridiculous

Best defensive forward in the league? Tell that to Sean couturier lmfao. Take nichuskin off the avs and they still finish top of their division. Take barzel off the islanders and they’re a lottery team

Brandon Pirri also was on pace for over 30 goals. Bjorkstrand isn’t a “30 goal scorer” till he does it. And I highly doubt he’ll ever score 40
