Wings pass, makes no sense for the red wings to trade draft picks at this time

JT it’s only a question if he can cover the bet over the term or not. Many contracts became more questionable with the cap becoming flat suddenly can’t fault teams for not seeing that coming. Good signing thus far.

That’s it exactly. Tavares was the top star ufa. You do what you need to get them signed. Tavares will never be a “good contract” best you can hope for is that he ages of well, leads well and his contract is never a burden. For the next 2-4 years his contract should be fair. After that... it’s the price you pay for getting a star for free.

I agree. You never turn down a superstar/star. Especially for free. The potential ramifications are obviously to be dealt in the future and rarely the main topic of discussion.

I agree completly. He's overpaid but that's fine.

TSN are idiots? Maybe, but remember all sports talk shows are "entertainment" shows not sports shows. What talking heads say...often don't have significance in fact.

Tavares wasn't overpaid as a UFA. The Leafs overpaid Matthews, Nylander and Marner by a total of 5m when compared to similar RFAs with the same term at the time of signing.

Well he’s overpaid and he’s not a point per game player or a consistent 35-40 goal scorer. He’s only reached PPG 4 times in 11 seasons and 35+ goals 3 times.

This is so true, it is one of the reasons Montreal has such a hard time signing UFA's their GM's only want to pay players their value on terms they like. They don't understand that you need to give to get. If MB had offered Hall 9 Mil x 7 years I am sure Hall would be a Hab right now. Hall would still be good through 5-6 of those years but maybe the last 1-2 years he starts to fall off. That is where trades with retained money come in. The Leafs can trade Tavares (providing he waives) in the last 1 or 2 years of his contract retaining half of it and teams would be interested.

With the nhl channel having him in the top 20 centres (I guess now that's you mention it, both).

Haven't really thought about it much but yeah I agree with the NHL Channel he is deffinately one of the top 20 centers in the league. With TSN no I don't agree. Now I do understand the point they are trying to make but come on he is only 30 and playing as good as he ever has. It's far too early to even suggest that. These lists are just someones opinion and not worth getting up set over it.
