Byfield Im willing to die on

Description
In the aftermath of the WJC finals many have erroneously put the blame of Canada's downfall on Quinton Byfield and have declared him a bust mere months after his draft. I figure this is an opportune time to make some declarative statements of my own on the matter.

1) Lots of players on Canada's squad didn't show well and fell far short of expectations so I'm not sure why the brunt of the scrutiny should be aimed towards the youngest player on the team who had limited minutes and powerplay time. I doubt the reason is solely because of his draft position...

2) The WJC is a great experience for the players and very entertaining for fans but means nothing towards a player's NHL projection. It's a 2 week tournament which is a microscopic sample size. This year in particular holds even less merit IMO as a lot of these players haven't played any game of significance for 9 months leading up to it.

3) Quinton Byfield projects to be a 1C in the NHL and I expect him to be an absolute monster in this league in a few years. I'm so confident in this projection that I stated yesterday "I would trade every Leaf prospect of significance for Byfield straight up in a heartbeat" which was met with hostility by many. Here's what that would look like and I stand by it. I'm a big fan of all these Leaf prospects but none of them have a ceiling anywhere near as high as Byfield's.

Side note: If you're a Sens fan and you think Stuetzle is better, that's cool. I disagree, but you're entitled to your opinion. This is purely regarding those who seem to loathe the kid for not singlehandedly carrying Canada to victory when many called this year's team the best since 2005 and no one else on the team needed to step up.

He would be their future. I also have a lot of faith in their scouting (hence all the notable prospects taken pretty late picks up there) that they would be able to re-stock fairly quickly.

I wouldn’t include Sandin. He’s already shown he can perform at the nhl level. Has nothing to do with Byfields ceiling. Just smart asset management. I would keep the farm and restock. Much safer bet to use brute force. This idea that “oh hey our drafting is good so we will just get more prospects” is foolish.

Not that LA has any intrest in trading him whatsoever.

This isn't supposed to be taken as a serious trade offer, LA has no interest in trading him so it would never happen. More just trying to illustrate how good I think Byfield will be and that there's literally no package of prospects from Toronto (who I would say have a better than average prospect pool) that would be enough to get LA to move him after seeing so many people claiming he's a bust after the WJC.

I think it's absurd to flip the script on a player based on a WJC performance; as you said it's a tiny sample size and there are factors that he has no control over that affect results. However, having said that, I was not that big a fan of him heading into the draft and wouldn't be at all surprised if he falls down a few spots in the rankings in future re-drafts.

I respectfully disagree with your NHL projection but thank you for acknowledging how absurd putting stock into a WJC performance will translate to NHL success.

Yeah, I don't understand why people are harping on him.

Or Perfetti for that matter.

It's as if fans think just because they were drafted high that makes them immediately ready for the NHL.

That is just simply not true. Maybe instead of being Homer's, actually try listening to the scouting reports on these kids. Neither Byfield or Perfetti were said to be anywhere close to being NHL ready.

Hell, only four players from this past draft were said to be that, and even then they cautioned that they could still take a year. With the exception of the number one guy.

Lafreniere
Rossi
Lundell
Holtz

In that order. People really need to temper their expectations a little better.

I don't think they do. They've got probably the best prospect pool in the NHL and rather have the best player since they're already prepared to surround him with talent. They don't need more complimentary players.

The past two defenceman of the tournament at the World Juniors, last year's best goal scorer in the OHL and more and it's a bunch of meh. Sure.
