Ideas for a RHD upgrade at trade deadline

Created by: bolts03
Team: 2020-21 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 20, 2021
Published: Jan. 20, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The major hole in the Bolts lineup this year is clearly at right D. The loss of Shattenkirk was more impactful than what many realized. I do believe that Cal Foote has a bright future with the Lightning but it takes a few years for defense to develop in the league. So by trade deadline time if he is not performing at the level needed it would be well worth looking for a defensemen.

I think a right defensemen that makes 3 to 5 million a year with a contract expiring this offseason from a rebuilding team would be the best move for the Bolts. With this in mind I see players like Sami Vatanen, Neal Pionk, Tyson Barrie, and Brandon Montour as potential options. The return package for any of these guys would be one of the $5 million guys preferable Johnson, a prospect, and a draft pick.

The defensemen the lightning trade for would depend on what team is struggling and doesn't look like they are going to make the playoffs and want assets for an expiring contract.

Are there any other right defensemen the lightning should be interested in that I missed? Really just curious what others think. Thanks!

I know you asked about rentals but I still think Dumba would be perfect on your blue line. Would probably have to happen after expansion so you don't have to expose a good D.

Would love to have Dumba but just don't see any way to make a deal for him work he's worth more than a salary dump, B prospect, and late 1st pick

Agreed. We'd want Cirelli I imagine and I don't see the Bolts moving him. Plus it would be tough to get the cap to work out.

Depends on the package imo. Right now we’re building off Gibson Zegras Drysdale and Steel + Comtois

I don't think we need a half season rental RHD bad enough have to get rid of ABB without at least seeing what he can do.
Demers is someone I like if we can make it work without trading anyone, since nobody would waive for Arizona at the TDL.
If Toronto ever puts Bogo on waivers due to any cap juggling, he will be ours if someone doesn't get him first.
For now I think we could look for someone on waivers to give a few games.

I don't know a lot about Demers but at his age is he a better option than Schenn? Thats really the guy I think the Lightning would look to replace

Demers would easily slide in as a partner for McDonagh or Hedman.

I am really interested to see if they take a chance on Honka, it really can't hurt. And as for ABB unfortunately I think he is going to be another Marchessault/Verhaeghe that won't find a spot on the Lightning but thrives somewhere else

Yes, I hope we take a chance with Honka if he falls to us. As for ABB, I think the possibility is there for him to make a mark on the 2nd or 3rd lines next year. If we could entice him with the same deal Verhaeghe got (from FLA), that would give us a chance to keep him until our cap picture is a little nicer.

Although I'd love to keep him through the rebuild, Connor Murphy is probably a piece Chicago will look to trade in the next 12-13 months. He has another year after this one at just under $4 million.

So what about Murphy (50% retained) for one of Joseph, Volkov or ABB, Jan Rutta (perhaps the Hawks could then flip him again?) and the 2021 1st rounder? Then down the right side the Lightning have Murphy, Cernak, Foote/Schenn.

I'll be honest, if Johnson is included, I don't think there's a fit. 4 years is a long time and while I generally like Johnson, I want available roster spot in the next couple of years to go to our young guys. So hopefully taking someone off the roster and Rutta is a deal that works money-wise. And Tampa gets a top-4 defenseman with term for under $2 million

I did think of Murphy but thought Hawks fans would be very against it. I do like the deal but the Lightning wouldn't give up Rutta, Hedman works well with him and I don't think they want to mess with that. I understand the hesitation with Johnson but instead of retaining the Murphy salary the Hawks could retain some of Johnson and flip him to a playoff team looking for some middle lineup offense. He is still a good player just an ugly contract. With the hawks rebuilding for at least the next few years retaining $2 million for 3 years wouldn't kill them.

      and the 2021 1st rounder?

I'd have to think GMJBB has reserved that 1st for paying off Seattle in the expansion draft.

Eh, I don't know. If retaining a bit and throwing in a pick was all it took to get rid of him, I think Tampa would've done it already. Unless he has a massive resurgence in Chicago, it would be very hard for us to trade him. I'm more okay with retaining almost 2 mill on Murphy because we'd be getting a nice haul back. But Johnson is much more of an anchor at this point.

Not saying another team wouldn't be interested, but right now, I don't think Johnson is a piece that would be worth it enough for the Hawks to take.

That's ok as far as I'm concerned. When we crash out of our window I want to be so low in the draft we get the next Stamkos/Hedman as building blocks. I don't want to be stuck in competitive purgatory like some teams.

The other ones are rentals. Pionk is an RFA. Pionk is also better than the other three. Not even close to enough for pionk

I feel bad for saying it, but I agree, noone is touching Johnson with all that term left. Maybe Gourde could work with only a year left after this one. Quite frankly, most of the $5 mil guys have negative value in this environment. Just look at what all the UFAs signed for. Better options there ... eg: a more versatile Blake Coleman when he hits market this year. He will be of significant interest around the league.

that is roughly the cost of a team taking TJ right now, with nothing back in return. you arent getting vats for free.
