speculative but killing time until Thursdays game

Created by: Habs4ever
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 26, 2021
Published: Jan. 26, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Could only use existing players in system. Had to respect salary cap. Years of contract easily debatable but that was not my focus. Also Tuna was signed to a 6 yr deal after current season, which is why he is showing as a 4 year contract.

By 2022-2023 he will only have 1 year left. As I said in my notes my focus was on current players and staying under the cap. So you can change that to a 5th round then.

His contract will still have negative value by then. Just buy him out

A lot of people do not like Edmundson and actually want to move him. I disagree. He hits, blocks shots, fights and has good plus/minus. Not a flashy player but all teams need character guys. When I was coaching Junior A, my GM wanted to trade one of my D similar to Edmundson. I said to him if you trade him you just made our 4 offensive guys shrink. When he is in the lineup, they know if anything happens they are protected. This is speculative as we do not know how he will be in two years from now but if he is playing the same, a team would give a 4th for him.

Could also do that. Again, my focus was on players in system and staying under the cap. So far the comments are on Byron and Edmundson which was not my focus at all. Put them down as 7th round picks if it makes you tingle! all good!

The signings and roster looks good and IF Poehling steps up and shows he belongs then letting Danault walk in favor of resigning Tatar makes perfect sense.

ELC maximum is 925K
IDK why Caufield + Norlinder makes more than that
RHP is a ECHL player lol

Poehlings ceiling is super hard to predict right now. We need to see him but if he turns into a good 3rd liner, then you could even trade Danault away for a decent asset. I love Tuna. He has fun playing the game and he doesn't cheat, with no ego and low maintenance. I also am looking forward to Norlinder. I was reading this morning that he is focusing on his defensive game, plus he missed 9 games for a knee injury and on his first game back scored a goal. He admitted in the interview that his offensive numbers have taken a hit but he hopes to work on that prior to coming over at the end of his two year contract. It was tough making sure I stayed under the cap.

That Tatar contract is ridiculous. The AAV is fine, but you don’t sign a 30 year old to a 6 year deal unless they’re really, really good. That would age terribly.

Also, saying that RHP will be an NHLer in 2 years is a bit of a stretch. And there’s no chance you get Suzuki on a long term contract with that low of an AAV.

To be honest I did not even pay attention to the fifty thousand over to Norlinder and Caufield. So thank you for pointing that out.

As for RHP, I was over the cap with the player I wanted so I had to find someone cheaper and that was in the system. By 2022-2023 season, RHP will have two full seasons under Joel Bouchard in Laval. I spoke with Joel about two weeks ago and he really likes RHP and sees him progressing over the next two seasons. So I also went on that, plus he fits the cap situation.

The Tuna deal is speculative. I don't know how he will finish this season but he is looking really good, plus he has produced everywhere he has gone except Vegas but he wasn't in the line up much. But he is low maintenance, plays the game right and has no ego. So maybe a 4 year deal but I think he will fetch 5.5 to 6.5 depending on salaries across the league with covid.

As for RHP, I spoke with Joel two weeks ago and he really likes him a lot. By this time he will have 2 full years under his belt, so who knows. With that said, he was more of a roster spot as the player I wanted would have put me over the cap and RHP keeps me under.

The Suzuki contract is the sticking point because he is looking like a real super player. That one will be tough. My focus was not really on the years or term but putting together a roster in 2 years, while only using the players in the current system and staying under the cap.

Joel Edmunsen is a slightly cheaper version of Karl Alzner.

well we are close but Edmundson can fight and hit. Both could block shots and PK. Edmundson is a touch faster in his first step pivot. Both are good guys but Alzner doesn't fight or really hit. We got Alzner too late in his career and also when the league was picking up in speed.

Edmundson had a bad game against TML, but since that game he’s been doing just fine

Agreed. and boy oh boy did people react after the 1st game, they wanted him traded so bad. Before last game he was leading team in plus/minus/hits, and blocked shots. I like him and I have been saying for two years Petry needs a big body defensive d-man to stabilize his game.

I mean, fighting isn't really a big part of the game at this point, and Alzner was pretty much in-line hit wise with Edmundsen from 2013-2017...They're both players that should never have been given the contracts that they got.

Hits and blocked shots are fun stats and all, but you they're also signs that your team doesn't have possession of the puck while you're on the ice (Hence his Fen%rel/Corsi%rel, which, coincidentally, are almost very similar to Alzner's).

I guess what I'm saying here is, if all you're looking for is a banger who blocks shots, there are much cheaper options out there who do the same thing as well or better than Edmundson.

His stats in Carolina I would throw them out. The play a man coverage. St Louis and MTL play a zone coverage. Two different styles of play. A team does not always have the puck, especially in PK, which is where your shot blockers are very valuable.

I agree the fighting in the game has changed and we got rid of the designated goon, which I am happy about but I will bet you Drouin and Suzuki are happy to have Andersen on their line, just like McDavid is happy when Kassian is in the line up and Maroon in Tampa.

If Edmundson keeps playing the way he is playing he will be very valuable this year and next. Then other players will be pushing for his spot, at that point there is only 2 years left on his contract. You may also, depending on who is coming up the pipeline decide to not resign or move Chiarot. BTW's I coached Chiarot in June 2007 during the selection process of TEAM Ontario and trust me he has come a very long way to be playing the way he is playing right now.

Not even close. The only NHLer that comes close to Alzner is Jack Johnson, and even then, he’s still a better player.
