The DNVR Bennett trade idea

Created by: coga16
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 20, 2021
Published: Feb. 10, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The talk of Avs interest/checking in on Bennett based on Friedmans radio spot and the mention of Flames seeking a similar age player back.

This is probably the most logical swap. JT Compher and Bennett doesnt really do anything for either side. Nuke is 24, Bennett is 24, the cap hits are basically identical and Nuke is locked in for another year at 2.5m....Bennett probably wont get much of a raise if any at all on his next deal as a pending RFA.

Teams are just moving parts around swapping aspects of each others games around...Nuke is elite defensively with some offensive pop but not really phyisical at all. Bennett brings the physical edge, has some offensive side but isnt as strong defensively.

I am not a big bennett fan, and not the biggest fan of this trade idea, but if the goal is to ensure you have that gritty game for hte playoffs and with Calvert hurt, maybe unable to fully return with his concussion....Its worth a conversion at least

I don't mind it, but I'd assume that if Calgary falls out of it, Bennett would be moved for someone who is expansion draft exempt, since Nuke is likely the guy that they'd lose. If they're hanging in there, and it looks like he's a guy that could push them past someone like Edmonton or Winnipeg, I could see it.

I wouldn't do it. The more Josts and Nukes in the bottom six the better. I'd rather have elite defensive ability than sandpaper.

I wouldn't consider this if I'm Colorado.

Unfortunately as an avs fan who occasionally listens to the DNVR podcasts these guys are wrong most of the time.. Aj haefele basically says whatever he wants and rudolph just agrees because he seems not to know any better..

Dont put a ton of stock into this

Coga you ready my mind haha. When AJ and Rudo were discussing Bennett I was also mentally considering the possibility of moving Nichuskin. There's a lot of logic to it as you mentioned above in the description.

That said, if Avs move for Bennett I would prefer if they do it for Compher, or at the deadline for futures, or alternatively even in the offseason. Moving Jost or Nichuskin for him isn't very appealing.

Why not have both?

Bennett ---- 3C/Newhook ----- Donskoi
Nichuskin --- Bellemare ------- Jost

There you have an elite defensive 4th line with 3 really good PKers, and a 3rd line that has a good mix of grit, speed, and scoring touch.

Eliott Friedman mentioned that the Colorado were interested in Bennett before getting shut down. Colorado were the only team he mentioned too.

If it's JT moving I strongly consider it (especially now that Bellemare has risen from the dead). I say no if Nuke is the ask though.

I just put the idea out there to see what it would look like, like I said in the description, I am not a fan of this move but worth a convo

I would disagree with DNVR being wrong most of the time, they have the most indepth and best sources when it comes to the Avs...especially compared to the Post, Mile High, and Dater. DNVR is the best the fan base has for coverage

I would prefer to do it over compher as well just for the cap benefits but if they want to just refocus the roster skill set in the bottom 6, I can at least buy that argument even though I am not a bennett fan.
The one thing this could possible do is give Kaut a better route to the NHL full time as a PK guy....Jost and Kaut can be 2 defensive fwds instead of loading up with 3 of similar type guys with Nuke as well.

Avs are just different not better or worse if they take Nuke and Calvert and swap them wiht Kaut and Bennett in those roles

I don't think i'd trade nichuskin but you can always tell when calvert isn't in the lineup especially in a long series, and with him having head injuries who knows how he will return this year or if he even will. Bennet would be a decent 4th line add for colorado, that can replace the grit that calvert brought, i'd rather have bennet in the lineup than dries.

im not a huge fan of it, but if this replaces calverts sandpaper and allows for Kaut to get into the NHl as a full time PK/Defensive fwd...I can live with that bc I love Martin J Kaut

I don't think you have to move Nichuskin to create a role for Kaut. Moving Compher achieves that as well, possibly even more so given that Kaut and Compher both like to play on the right.

If we look ahead to next season once we hopefully add a 3C (or Newhook), if you move Nichuskin then Compher and Kaut would still be competing for the same 4RW spot, along with O'Connor no less.

Bennett ------ 3C/Newhook----- Donskoi
Bowers --------------- Jost ---------- Kaut/Compher/O'Connor

If however you move Compher then everyone is in their correct position:

Nichuskin ----- 3C/Newhook ---- Donskoi
Bennett -------------- Jost ----------- Kaut/O'Connor
(Bowers)

Also, I'd much rather have 3 good PKers in Nichuskin, Jost, and Kaut; rather than just Jost and Kaut. Compher is clearly the one to move.

probably not but if you do move Nuke you probably get Kaut into the NHL quicker. LOC has stolen Kauts spot with how good he has played. But I do think if avs move on from Nuke it makes Kauts skill set just more valuable to the team sooner than later

LOC brings at least some of what Calvert does. Not the fighting but a lot of effort and energy. I'm a fan and have been for some time.

I hope I'm wrong on Kaut. I have been wrong many times before and will be again. We'll see. He seems to be a good dude though so I'm pulling for him.

even today, you could drop Kaut onto the PK and he will be good at it, that was always this stronger part of his game even when they drafted him, smart defensive fwd who has played pro hockey against men at 18

meh. i wouldn't do that trade but it wouldn't bother me if they did. i agree i'd rather it be compher just to get the cap flexibility even though i think the avs still lose that deal.

He's a smart player. Where he loses me is his skating. It's not awful by any means, but his limited speed and agility could hold him back on this team. I think he's an NHL player but just see him thriving more elsewhere.

Sorry but I just don't see the love for Bennett. That's where the discussion ends for me. It's not as bad as signing Brad May as someone mentioned in another thread but it's heading in that direction.
