They got him and Paquette from Ottawa for Dzingel than waived Galchenyuk and he cleared. My question is why give up a guy who is still relatively young and looks good in the KHL when you could've had him for free?

Maybe something to do with salary cap? Im not sure tho.

Update: I think Leafs wanted to claim him but they didn't have the cap. So they traded Warsofsky (since he was making 700k) with Korshkov (for value) for Chucky

I don't know what it is, but there has got to be some ulterior motive/reasoning here.

If you pick someone up on waivers, don't you have to keep him on the big team roster for a certain period of time?

Maybe the Leafs want him to go straight to the taxi squad.

They could now send him between their lineup and their taxi squad without having him need to go through waivers again (he can play 10 games or spend 30 days on roster before needing waivers again). It helps a lot with cap and he can be a good addition. As it stands, because of their cap, they could not claim him, since they do not have enough cap. Also, this trade allowed them to drop one contract.

The reason is simple:

Carolina was looking to rid themselves of Dzingel's cap so they moved him to Ottawa for Galchenyuk. They had no interest in keeping him. Toronto likely had interest in Galchenyuk from Ottawa but divisional price was likely too high. Toronto moved 2 guys that likely won't have any NHL impact for Galchenyuk because it clears a contract spot. They can now add someone for only a draft pick instead of having to include a player. It's a very good deal for Toronto. It comes with no risk because of Galchenyuk doesn't work out, they send him to the minors or taxi squad since he's cleared waivers already. If he works out and performs, they gave up virtually nothing for him.

Former 30 goal scorer that could definitely do it again if he plays with the right players, only makes $1M against the cap, can go up and down to the taxi squad to help save money.. sure he hasn't been good for a few years, but playing in a top 9 like Toronto is as good of a shot as any to regain his form. & if it doesn't, Leafs have up nothing on their roster and nothing that would be making their roster.

I'll take deals like that any day.
