Crosby trade built after the 96 Gretzky trade

Created by: ngikas
Team: 2020-21 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2021
Published: Feb. 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Gretzky 1996 trade: Craig Johnson (great NCAA player), Patrice Tardif (great NCAA player) and Roman Vopat (great juniors player), plus a 1997 1st and 1996 5th

Crosby trade: Swayman (great NCAA player, Hobey Baker finalist), Bjork (real good NCAA player), and Studnicka (real solid juniors player), plus the 2021 1st and 2022 5th

I think on paper the Gretzky trade at the time was more appealing, it didn't work out so well for the Kings. At the same time Gretzky was a rental so the price was a little cheaper. I think the '96 trade is a better comparable than the '88 trade because Crosby is at a similar stage in his career of the '96 trade. So the value might be a little bit short (by maybe a couple picks or another prospect and a pick). , one because goalies (Swayman) dont carry as much value in trades and looking at how the players performed before entering the NHL in the Gretzky trade but in reality I think it becomes a better trade than what resulted for the Kings in the '96 Gretzky trade. Lastly if we want to include successful collegiate players Curtis Hall (a 2020 Hobey Baker nominee) could replace Swayman or be added.

Just for fun I think the '88 trade comparable would be something like DeBrusk, Studnicka and 3 1st round picks. I also could see this as something that's more realistic.

I know the Crosby trade mocks have been spammed and argued over but I didn't see anyone take the Gretzky trade approaches to it. So I figured what the heck, lets just try it out. I'm sure other teams could come up with more appealing offers based on the reasoning that backed my idea but this is probably the most comparable for the Bruins.

Yeah that's fine, I was just trying something out, I dont think either side would like this trade. and I think there's much better out there for the pens to get if they were to actually shop Crosby

A big reason is you cant send money in trades. They also got back 15 million, which accounting for inflation, would be 33 million dollars. So if you can find a way to account for that 33 million dollars in value, go for it. Otherwise, its not really worth trying to make a comparison

I didn't even think about that, If that's what it would take I wish I had the money to write Mario a 33 million dollar check to get this bad boy done right now

I think Bjork needs to be debrusk and its not a horrible package. The thing is if he does go up for auction and teams have better young players to move it probably wouldnt be the package pitts wants.

Yeah I agree, would be damn near impossible for the Bruins to keep up with the offers other teams could put together unless Hextall really likes Stud/Swayman/Bjork. I also dont see a Crosby trade with only one 1st round pick. Just a different approach to the idea

The differences in the 96 Gretzky trade and a trade for Crosby right now is that Gretzky was 2 years older at the time and he was a rental. So you knew Gretzky’s prime was pretty much over and was going to end up trending downward for him. Crosby likely still has 2-3 years of great play in him. He still is producing a ppg+ and is on an amazing contract. The Gretzky trade was pre salary cap era so contracts didn’t matter that much. In a world where Crosby only makes 8.7 million when it should be 12-14 million makes him that much more valuable in a salary cap era.

I see all of these Crosby trades on here, and my first though is, “would you trade Bergeron or Marchand for a package like this?”

No, you definitely wouldn’t, and Crosby is still better than both of those guys.

the voices in your head don't count.
He's stated over and over again he only wants to play in Pittsburgh and wants to finish his career there.

Yeah I stated a few things that would probably change the value current day like the fact that he was a rental. Gretzky was still a point per game player at the time I believe if I remember looking at the stats correctly. You're right about the production though, definitely dropped off a bit at the time of that trade. And the big thing is the salary cap, someone above talked about how a big thing was the cash exchange involved in trades then which we obviously done have now. Just looking at a Crosby trade from a different perspective that I didn't see anyone take. I dont think he ever gets moved but fun idea to think about.

Studnicka is no longer a juniors level player, swayman is no longer an ncaa player, bjork is no longer an ncaa player. Im not overvaluing our players. bjork looks like a 3rd liner at best, studnicka might be a 2c but its hard to gauge, swayman looks like an absolute stud goalie 1. That being said, do we really want the back end of crosbys contract? when hes exiting his prime and still signed for 5 years. Crosby is a hof player but i dont think penguins take that offer, and i dont think bruins want to give up more than that as it kills the future of the team.

Yeah I wasn't taking what the players are currently into the comparison. I was taking what they were as prospects and using them as a comparable to what was involved in the Gretzky deal. I agree with your overall consensus of the players involved but I think giving up those players for another 2-3 years of Crosby playing at an elite level is worth it. I just have a different perspective than a lot of fans. I value adding another Stanley Cup or potentially more with this line up over trying to maintain an elite level of playing 1. because we dont really have the assets in the farm to maintain and 2. we've been a top level team for the last 10-12 years and a rebuild is inevitable imo. I understand this may not be the move to make but I do think pretty much everyone should be on the table in regards to trading and improving the lineup. The teams been right there the past few years and they've always been a piece or two short. And maybe this year isn't the year to do that with the path to the cup likely being a little unorthodox with the divisions all split up but the clocks ticking and once Marchy, Bergy, Krejci and Rask fade away we really dont know when we'll be back at this level as an organization.

Pittsburg isn't trading Crosby but IF they did they would want at least 2 Grade A prospects which the Bruins don't have. Bjork leans toward 4th line winger, Studnicka leans toward 3rd line center, Swayman leans toward a backup goalie, a late 20's 1st round pick. That's nowhere near getting Crosby. As a Bruins fan I wouldn't do the deal anyways. Not in a position to trade the few young assets we have as they try to transition forward.
