Time to think about moving Mika

Created by: vosse9
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2021
Published: Mar. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think it’s time to start talking about the future of Mika. Had an amazing year last year just filling the nets with 41 goals in 57 games . Was headed for a big long term deal as our number one center. Had covid and missed training camp. Absolutely snake bitten right now despite actually getting chances and finally hitting the net. Management is surely looking at options on a new deal or checking around the league what they might command in a trade for him. Contenders who don’t want a rental would be thrilled for this guy despite early struggles. Rangers would need to take back money for any deal to work in this current cap hell of a league. Would be targeting expiring deals with possibilities of flipping them to another team or players in the same boat as Mika with just an extra year on their deals. Younger established players, prospects on the verge would be preferred with a solid pick as well. Really need to be confident in Chytil taking that top center role and Strome continuing his solid 2C role.
Two targets I see who could use him to be outright cup favorites would be Vegas and Colorado. Couple others in the west would be Dallas and Nashville both needing a roster shakeup and I’m sure don’t want to go into a full rebuild

How could a player who has scored 6 points in 19 games garner that kind of return?

Someone desperate would probably give up a decent haul for him, but it wouldn't be the Avs.

so its bowers and a first basically for the colorado trade...
or cody glass and a 2nd line winger in the vegas trade...

These values are incredibly different. i dont know how to say it but you arent getting a top tier prospect who is already playing in the nhl and playing well and a top 6 forward for a top 6 center. Its just not gunna happen. I could see an offer of prospects or picks but you wouldnt get that specific return above from vegas. Glass is probably a non starter for them.

He had 75 pts in 57 games last year including 41 goals. He’s been getting a lot of chances the last stretch of games just been unlucky

Colorado has the expiring cap dumps that would work for money. Vegas doesn’t really have that besides Alec Martinez. Don’t think they want to part with him unless Rangers send Lindgren. Don’t think the Rangers want to do that either unless it’s a big deal overall. Smith is having a down year and center is much more valued. Glass may be a nonstarter could have to be Brisson if the Rangers are ok with waiting a couple years on him

Would be a nice fit in Colorado behind Mackinnon, and they also have Newhook who could go the other way.

I think a contender like Vegas who lack a 1C would be likely to outbid Colorado though as they're more desperate for a top C.

i would look to resign him on the cheap as of now. hes not playing to his expectations either and this can not last. if it does for the season then so be it. we are in the toughest division in a weird year where teams can study the way to play you to shut one player out. get a high pick and attempt to rebound. they are still in this rebuild stage. i did not expect them to contend this year and they are still so young. a young team will be inconsistent thats the fact of life and we have seen what they can do so we should give the young guys as much opportunity as possible

I think he’s be a great 2c for the panthers for the right price. A first Connelly and some prospect not lundel knight or denisenko would probably work well

Avs trade might look more like Compher, Kaut, 1st and go from there (imo). I like the fit for Colorado though.

I just dont see how what essentially amounts to a 1st, a late first rounder 5 years ago, and a 3rd = glass and a top 6 winger.

You are right, they dont have any expiring dumps, which is why i doubt this happens. would be a reaaaal shock if they went after ziba. Now that doesnt rule them out of the center market, i just think they might go for a 2-3c type player. stephenson hasnt looked terrible, glass has looked pretty great and karlsson looks pretty good too.

There is no point in trying to acquire him, since we have lundell, who is on pace to be better then Zib in the 2C role for our team

I agree there. But I still think he’s 2 years away. A year in the ahl to get used to the rink size. So a year or 3 of z would be nice to have to show barkov we want to win.

Would be a good fit there as well. Mika does have a nmc so he’d have to waive to go there. Nice season they’re putting together down there and Barkov is a risk to leave if they don’t contend

Wasn’t sure how Colorado felt about moving Compher, who I do like. Same with Rangers acquiring his term and cap hit. I’m sure they’ll be shooting for Newhook but it’s doubtful to pry him away. Kaut hasn’t been great but I’d still take a shot at him

Exactly. Why I’d be okay trading for him especially since our odds of making the playoffs and making a small run are high.

Stephenson has been great this year just feel like he’s a real solid 3C for them in a cup win. Glass has been great as well just not sure he’s ready to carry the playoff load. Karlsson was a great surprise for them and just plays a solid game

thats why i said i think they go for a 2-3c type. Maybe more of a 2 than a 3 but one of those guys that can fill a depth role if everyones healthy. or you bounce glass to wing and put someone at 2c. karlsson is good enough to be a 1c. hes not an elite 1c but hes good enough to draw that matchup.

They’ve been pushing hard for a cup for a few years. Made some aggressive moves as well. That’s why I was thinking that they’d consider Mika to fit with Stone and Pacioretty. Feel like that would be their 1A with the Karlsson line as a 1B. If they had to move Smith then Tuch could easily fill that role. Stephenson with Glass on the wing for third line would be pretty dominant too.

I wouldn't think of trading him at the moment..not only would NYR be giving up on the season, they would be selling low. Reality is that Zibs was probably due for a step back from last year's production...but the way the season was patched together- and the fact he himself dealt with Covid...I wouldn't be too quick to send him packing. Unless provided an overwhelming offer (doubt it), I would see where the team is as the TDL approaches...this Ranger team has played better than their record shows...and with some real good players on their way back into the lineup, if Zibs turns a corner this still may be a playoff team. If they are not really in the playoff hunt come TDL I would only move him if a top C prospect were coming back...think Newhook, Krebs, etc. If those teams turn their nose up then wish them luck with their current center depth in dealing with the likes of Tampa in trying to win within their current window...at this point, wait to see what the off season brings in terms of extending him or moving him to a wider group of teams looking to deal.

Real solid take there. I’m actually not in favor of moving him either just feel like it has to be in the realm of possibilities. I don’t think he signs an extension til halfway through next year if he’s still on the team if he has a full down year this season. Value is lower right now but with his past and being under contract another year he still might command a good return. If they bottom out again this year we could end up with a solid center in the draft of Beniers, Johnston or Eklund but they’d be years away from being truly effective

Pass from VGK, Glass, Stephenson, and Wild Bill are perfectly fine Cs. Only way I see them trading Glass is for a legitimate upgrade like Eichel and obviously adding. Smith brings his A game during the playoffs also. So I’d rather go with Glass + Smith than Zibanejad.

Maybe if Mika was still scoring 40 goals a season but you’re not getting lundell for what he’s doing now or lack of doing.

I was liking forward to grabbing Lundell if the Rangers didn’t win the lottery last year
