Wild Bill trade deadline moves

Created by: Schmidty2go
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 5, 2021
Published: Mar. 5, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Wild move out their depth and add picks/prospects to make this a short turnaround on the rebuild. I would have liked to move Bjugstad and Bonino but with the flat cap and their poor play there probably isn't much demand. This also gives the Wild future Cap space as well as those extra early picks for Judd Brackett!
Trades
1.
MIN
  1. Frost, Morgan
  2. Gustafsson, Erik
  3. 2022 1st round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
With Hayes, Patrick and Couturier down the middle, Frost is expendable. Adding Dumba to the backend adds a big shot from the right side and Fletcher knows what he brings to the team. The 1st rounder will most likely be mid-late round.
PHI
  1. Dumba, Matt
Additional Details:
Wild move Dumba out to get Cap Space and roster space for Addison or Menell. Also allows the Wild to go into the ED with a 7-3-1 approach
2.
MIN
  1. 2021 3rd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Rangers add defensive depth & experience to their backend for the extra 3rd rounder they picked up from Buffalo
NYR
  1. Gustafsson, Erik
Additional Details:
Wild move out Gustafsson to allow the Wild to evaluate the other young defensive players on the roster/taxi squad. This spot will be filled by Addison/Menell this year or the following (in Menell's case if he gets the nod)
3.
MIN
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Boston picks up a depth forward they are familiar with and had some success in a cup run a few years ago. They also get an extra pick in the upcoming draft, in the 4th round.
BOS
  1. Johansson, Marcus
  2. 2021 4th round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
The Wild move a guy who hasn't worked out in exchange for a pick in the 2022 draft, which was part of BG's plan when signing all these players on 1yr terms.

I am honestly not worried about the Bruins depth forwards. Johansson doesn't put them over, so I see no reason. They could use a goal scorer, but that's not Marcus.

IF Kase isn't coming back, or someone else gets hurt, but right now, he'd be taking Studncika or Frederic's ice time and I don't want that.

This is close, but if you rather have Frost then make the pick a 2nd and I'd be more comfortable. Frost could play wing in PHI so no rush to move him, but would certainly help PHI with their RD woes.

Than wild wouldn't. The ask has always been a top 6c or high 1st with top 6c prospect

That’s a very reasonable ask but I think the Wild are gonna try to leverage that 1st. I think BG is planning more on an off-season move so he’s looking for a small overpay in season.

Honesty, Hartman could be a good fit there if MIN makes him available. He’s got more skill than you’d expect and he is the prototypical playoff forward, not to mention his attitude would be fantastic.

I agree, but I am really hoping the Wild hang onto him for just that reason. I know he as arbitration rights and will probably get 2.5-3m, which might be too much for BG but I think he is worth it given his ability to play up and down the lineup.

I think you are right, but my other logic around putting this out there is it is all trades that help keep Pitt out of the playoffs as well. Helping the teams competing with Pitt for that 4th spot in the hopes that we can get Pitt's as a lottery pick.

I doubt he gets a QO from a contender. I think he’d be able to be resigned less than that if we wanted to.

Pick is less of a concern, getting full value for Dumba is more important.

Well, getting the pick to be a lottery pick helps get full value for Zucker (even though Addison looks legit). And I agree on Dumba... getting a late 1st from Philly with Frost, and then pick up a 3rd on the trade of Gustufsson makes it a 1st, Top Prospect and 3rd for Dumba which I think is pretty fair for a Right Shot D with his skill, shot, age & term.

Right, I’m on board that a 1st needs to be there but I’m not concerned about making the Pens pick a lotto. The odds are too small to really take that into into account.

Your reasoning for moving Gust to NYR is the same reason NYR declines...

I'm not following your logic? Because they don't want more veteran help for a Playoff push? Explain

Mojo and a 4th this year for a 2nd in two years. If it was a 2nd straight up I would agree with you, but being a low second and you get a higher 4th this year I felt it evened out. What would you think is a fair price?

Playoff push? in 2021?? nah bud, this season is over and it's certainly not a season to be buyers at TDL even if we are in 4th or 5th. Gust is a UFA/rental which we have no business buying. We have tons of youth that we need to move up/in to roster. Wild are the ones looking for a playoff push/run. He is better off on your roster than ours. Or pick a team who will actually be in the game, we are in the lottery draft rather than the playoffs this season.

2021 draft picks have very little value right now compared to other years

Ah, got it. Makes sense although the Wild have no business in the playoffs. Yes, they are playing well right now but it's all be secondary scoring and that won't last. This is a rebuild year and even to an extent next year. I just figured that being four points out and the Pitt front office changing direction that you might slide into that 4th slot. Thanks for explaining, makes sense.

Someone in one of my other threads tried to make that argument and I don't agree. It isn't like all these teams waited until this year to scout this class, they have had many of these guys on the radar for years. Yes, the draft is weaker that 2022 on paper, particularly at the top, but there is still a ton of talent in this draft and those teams that did their homework early will benefit. I think the 2022 players will be hard to scout/slot if things don't open up. But when it comes to 2021, my guess is that roughly the same 30 guys are on most draft boards with a few differences based on preference. Would you rather offer up your 2021 first since it has "little value"? smile And the Wild offer you a 2022 4th rounder?

MarJo has the been worst NHL FWD on the Wild this year, the eye test and the adv stats both say that. MN just needs to send him though waivers and to the taxi squad to save that $1m of his salary.
