If they claimed him, he would have had to go straight to the roster or the taxi squad, which would have caused complications for the rest of their roster and potentially led to them needing to waive someone in return. Waiting til he cleared waivers gave them the flexibility to send him straight to the AHL squad.

Another layer to that was the number of contracts within the organization. Toronto shipped two bodies out to get Galchenyuk so 46/50 but if they had claimed Galchenyuk off waivers they wouldve been a little more pressed at 48/50. At the very least it gave them a little more flexibility for the deadline if needed.

Exactly. There are definitely cases where players become more tradable after clearing waivers, and contract flexibility is a huge reason why some good players go unclaimed.

That said, Paul Byron is pretty close to untradable given the AAV and term for what he brings to the table as a player.
