It was 100% your point, you're trying to deflect because you made a stupid comparison and I called you on it. Even before this year Barrie was a premier offensive defenseman in the NHL.
Barrie is 30 this summer. That's not a great age to sign a guy for big term and big dollars. Besides, I'm pretty sure 21-year-old Evan Bouchard (1.52 P/60 at 5v5) can fill in for Barrie (1.53 P/60 at 5v5) going forward.

Why protect Iafallo? He's a pending UFA and probable trade target.
I personally wouldn't protect pending UFAs. Seattle's unlikely to take such assets, as they have zero leverage over them.
That's not how UFAs work with the expansion draft. The week prior to the draft, Seattle is allowed to negotiate new contracts with all pending UFAs and RFAs that are unprotected. If they come to terms with any of them, that player becomes the selection from their former team. If they don't come to terms, then Seattle is free to choose someone else. They don't have to select the player and cross their fingers that they can negotiate a new deal in the few days before free agent frenzy begins.
Regardless, I think that Iafallo will be extended in LA prior to the trade deadline. The Kings like him, and he likes LA. They don't have any other NHL ready options in the pipeline to replace him at 1LW if he leaves.

Can you tell me where did you get this info, because I've never heard anything of the sort.
Doesn't make sense to think that for instance VGK had the same option to negotiate with UFAs prior to ExD, yet they only picked four pending UFAs in that said draft, namely Engelland, Brickley, Berube and Thorburn, with the two latter of them being assets VGK got paid big time to take.

It was discussed in the weeks prior to the Vegas expansion draft, referred to as "Exclusive Free Agency."

Let's start with free agents, because even if a team can sign or qualify them, that doesn't mean they have the room to protect them. Plus, if a team doesn't sign them, Las Vegas will have an exclusive 72-hour period (starting June 18, 10 a.m.) to negotiate with and sign any pending free agents (unrestricted or restricted) left unprotected by their teams before submitting their expansion draft selections by 10 a.m. June 21. If Vegas signs a free agent in that window, that signing counts as their selection from the player's previous team.

Ah, I see.
Well regardless I wouldn't be too worried about losing Iafallo to SEA. If, as you put it, he likes the team and the team likes him, he's unlikely to sign a contract with them and thus become their ExD pick.

Probably true. Seattle is one of those teams that would be able to significantly overpay for him if they wanted to.
