Buffalo Big Changes Next Year

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2021-22 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 30, 2021
Published: Mar. 30, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Tampa Deal Clears Cap for Tamp and they get 1st overall. Buffalo get 2 young pieces to compliment their team and get a proven (but over priced) winner in Johnson.

Sign Danault to have a brutal 1-2-3 punch down the middle. CIrelli and Danault both were top 6 in Selke last year + Eichel.

Buyout Skinner because he has been useless. The cap hit on the deal is brutal next year (not this year) - so they would have to plan for that.

I still don't love their right side of the D for this year, but that could be adjusted for next year.

Thoughts?

I can guarantee you that Danault will never sign in BUF. He'll have a lot of similar offers elsewhere if he it the market

      1. Danault, Reimer and Oleksiak won't sign here.
2 There's no way does Buffalo does that Leafs deal.
      3. No way in hell Tampa accepts.

I wouldn't make that toronto trade for just ullmark, let alone both ullmark and hall and both retained.

As a Leaf, Ullmark and certainly Hall are unneeded. But instead of the Sabres trading for 14.6m in cap for those three players and lose all those picks, wouldn't the Sabres be better just to spend 14.6m on UFAs and keep the picks. Maybe not immediately but soon.

Oooh a 1OA and bag of assorted candy. Interesting, but that's enough to get Tampa to move on from Sergachev and Cirelli.

1&2 are valid, but Tampa would be dumb not to accept tbh. They are so strapped against the cap that they will have to move significant pieces in order to stay below the threshold. Maybe not Sergachev, but Cirelli is likely out just because they have too many good forwards and he can be expendable,

Hall is unneeded in Toronto, but Ullmark isn't. He would be a great acquisition on the Leafs behalf. Great goalie who can split games 60/40 with Campbell, and that can allow Freddie to go in LTIR and be 100% for the playoffs.

A lot of players would go before Cirelli and Sergachev.

So as presently contracted, they would be 5.366 mil over the cap next season, and that accounts for 11F, 5D, and 1G. So you need 1 extra player at each position. I hope the taxi squad remains a thing because its helpful to get guys in an out of the lineup without taking cap hits as scratches. Cal Foote and Borgman are RFA as well. You are probably looking at a big piece or two departing, unless BriseBois finagles another season ending surgery to one of the big dogs again. Tampa is in deeeeeeeeeeeeeeep cap trouble come 2021-22.

absolutely. Hence why they unload over 15m in this and get the 1st overall pick. Not their number one preference. But one hell of a consolation prize.

Killorn, McDonagh, Johnson, Gourde would go before these guys, that's approximately 21.5 mill. I'm pretty sure they'd rather trade their picks to get rid of McDonagh and Johnson than trade Sergy and Cirelli who're more important then the guys I named.

Sure but it would be a hard task to find suitors for Killorn, McDougnah, and Johnsons contracts. These guys are regressing with age. You're right though, they could dump them with picks to Detroit or NJD or Ottawa but it takes away ice time from their young players. Most teams are pinned against the cap with future RFA's to sign anyways, so it'll be a tough task for BriseBois to navigate Tampa through it. Interesting to see what happens.
