My guess is that Bennett can not wait to get out of Calgary and join the Leafs are jump start his career again.

Except for maybe Ullmark, I don't see how those new arrivals help the Leafs this season. Leafs are better just to keep their own guys and all those futures.

I have been debating your point of view a lot lately and questioning whether it is worth risking the chemistry of the team.....However, you only get so many chances to win a cup and thinking Leafs may need to add a depth defenceman and forward to protect them against injury problems.

I think the core members of the team will be disappointed if Dubas does not try to improve the team for the playoffs......I still think he is going to pull the trigger.....Hall's salary requirements are dropping like a $100,000 per day as we approach the deadline and making him more affordable.......I also think he would be highly motivated in Toronto to make a huge impact and salavage his season to earn a new contract......Dubas likes to pull off trades ahead of the pack but Anderson situation might have him waiting a bit to determine what to do.

I'm all for adding depth if necessary, especially an NHL capable Dman. But subtracting one just to add another doesn't add more depth. Trouble with Hall....or any player with 3m or 4m contract to Toronto, the Leafs have to trade cap such as Kerfoot. Then is it really worth it, especially from an American team.
Your point about chemistry is a good one.
Now with Vancouver having Covid problems, the trade partners for the Leafs seem to have diminished.

I really like Kerfoot.......I guess the other option is that you move Anderson to LTIR and free up Cap to bring in a depth defenceman and forward as insurance policies for injury and to make a deep run.....would need to bring in a back up goalie as well.

I wouldn't be opposed to moving for Hall and if it meant we move Kerfoot, I'm not against that either. Especially since Engvall has come on. It won't get for much though. Like Kerfoot and a 2nd because A) Hall just isn't worth much, very few can afford him even at half price and with how he's played his stock has fallen off big time. Maybe another prospect could be added but it won't be a big name.

OK... but his trade value wouldn't be based on what happens if he resurrects his career with Toronto.

Also, did Calgary not want him to succeed when they drafted him 3rd OV and played him 16+ min a night for the first few years of his career?

Why would his career take off, if he is just going to play <10 min per night in TO?

Hall has same agent as Marner and think he trains in Toronto.......I really think he could be comming to the Leafs.

He might only play 10 minutes a night this year but that would change for next year.

Are you suggesting you wouldn't trade three prospects and a 2nd round pick for a guy who's almost 25 years old and is -17 with 7 points in 34 games this year? What if it were just two prospects and a 3rd? smile

Only if the price is right. I generally don't like these sort of major moves but if he comes cheap, and knows he further down the depth chart then I'm good with it.

Take out ullmark and you have a deal.

Also, buffalo can't retain on 3 players since we already retained on staal

So the plan next year would to be worse, so he has an easier time playing higher in the lineup?

Not sure I like the sounds of that!

Gee, the fact that Hall has the same agent as Marner might discourage the Leafs.

A lot of people were critizing the Marner deal last year.......I thought it was a fair deal from Day 1........No one is complaining now.

Oh, I think it was horrid deal for the Leafs. Aho and Marner had identical stats for two years and Aho signed for 8.45 X 5. Marner comparable for six years should have 9m.
Leafs sure use that extra 1.7m a year of cap space. There was no reason for the Leafs to succumb to paying "hometown premiums" on their 3 RFA...,Marner, Nylander and Matthews.

Marner is a special, special hockey player who plays 5x5, PP and PK and is an absolute joy to watch......priceless to be exact......having a player like him attracts other players to Toronto......Can't wait for him to help the Leafs win a cup as his prime years are just starting.

Yes....he was a tough guy to deal with but I have never heard the Leafs complaining about the Marner deal.........My guess is that Matthews will end up staying in Toronto because of Marner in the future..... These two players are made for each other.

Dubas had backed himself into a corner and the Leafs were "going for it". Of course the Leafs management wouldn't complain publicly because they are the ones that signed the deal.
Still when going by comparables at the time, it was an overpayment, no doubt about it. My guess is that Matthews will not stay in Toronto due to the Leafs won't have enough cap to sign him. If Babcock had not been the coach, Matthews might have been agreeable to a longer term deal. IMO, and its was obvious, Matthews thought Babcock was incompetent as a head coach (I agree)
