Team Explanation
My list, I put Draisaitl at LW as I am not interested in having yet another Drai v AM34 debate today lol and he plays both. Also I included 6 D as ranking dmen is much harder as the big name guys have not necessarily been all that great this year, I tried to put the 6 best in the best order but let me know what you would change.

Obviously inured players are excluded as this ranking is almost entirely based on their play this year.

That's definitely a debate than can be had, Panarin is certainly more dynamic but he is pretty poor defensively. I can see both sides of the arguement.

I'd put Drai at C this year -- feel like he's been mostly a center.

Yeah I know, just I had a huge debate earlier with multiple people regarding Draisaitl and Matthews and I wasn't interested in doing it again lol

This is so hard to do, given how the north division gets the benefit of playing against a bad team every single game.

I agree that it is difficult do but I will say that while the North division is the weakest it is not that bad IMO

The best the division has to offer is a club that’s usually 4th or 3rd in their division. The rest is pretty much whether or not McDavid decides to be a superhero, and junk.

They might not have the high end teams that the other divisions have but people seem to dismiss the fact that their is at least one team if not a couple who are just as bad if not worse than Ottawa in every division and they have 3 teams that are playoff teams this year no matter how the divisions shake out IMO.

Montreal is a bubble playoff team, I think they are better than whoever the Central and West have as their 4 seed. Plus, people seem to forget they beat the Penguins in the qualifiers last year a team who is in a playoff spot in the deepest division in the league and they haven't gotten any better while I think the Canadians are deeper up front and on the backend.

Calgary and Vancouver have struggled but they are in the same tier as Philly, Arizona, St. Louis, San Jose, LA, Chicago, Dallas and Nashville. And in that tier they wouldn't be the worst teams by any means.

Ottawa is garbage but so is Detroit, CBJ, NJD, Buffalo and Anaheim.

The difference is that teams in a playoff spot in the north are garbage. I think all the playoff teams in the east would likely be first in the north, and the rangers would probably be comfortably in a playoff spot.

If Winnipeg, Toronto and Edmondton are "garbage" then so is the entire league except the 4 playoff teams in the East, Vegas, Colorado, Tampa, Carolina and Florida, anyways I'm not saying the North isn't the worst division I'm just saying it's not by as much as you think, no matter how you shake it they are all still NHL teams and the disparity in talent isn't that big. For example, while Toronto would be underdogs they would still have a reasonable chance of beating Carolina in a playoff series.

I more meant montreal, but both winnipeg and edmonton are definitely very flawed teams. I’m guessing in a normal year they would both be battling for a playoff spot, but not comfortably looking forward to the playoffs.

Without Panarin we wouldn’t have even had a chance of being respectable this year. I think he’s over Draisaitl this year.

Oh well I'll take it lol, everyone seems to have very different opinions on him so that's understandable. What don't you like about him? Who would you have over him?

For this year Rantanen is scoring more and has significantly better defensive metrics than Stone. Just saying and Devon Toews needs to be on there.

He isn't good defensively. Below-average at least. Devon Toews most likely.

Yeah true Toews could definitely be there over Nurse.

Unless you're talking about goals, Stone and Rantanen have the same amount of points, Rantanen has played one less game but he also plays with much better linemates, and Stones xGF/60 is signifigantly higher then Rantanens. As for defensive metrics Rantanen does have a better xGA/60 along with other important metrics but Stone's xG+-/60 is better, which I think is an underated stat for comparing offensive vs defensive impact. Stones EVO is much better while their PPO is the same. Rantanens EVD is better but he does not kill penalties which hurts his his overall defensive score compared to Stones as Stone kills penalties and in terms of SHD he's 3rd in the league. You can make the arguement that whether he kills penailties or not shouldn't effect his player evaluation, but to me playing in all situations is important. Because of this Stone's WAR, GAR and SPAR are all better then Rantanen.

While I can see your arguement for Rantanen, I still choose Stone, but it is a good debate and I see your side of it. I will say though in hindsight I should have Rantanen over Kane.

Agreed but while his xGA/60 isn't good it is better when he's playing with Bear so not sure how much his xGA/60 is effected by Barrie being a forward playing D lol. I agree though in hindsight I should've went with Toews, much better defensive metrics and his WAR, GAR, and SPAR are much better than Nurse, completely dismissed him TBH. I was just kind of mesmerized by Nurse's EVO being the best in the league among D and thought I shouldn't leave him out.

Obviously I get to see Rantanen every game, I just see what Stone has done against the Avs and in all honesty Pacioretty has been their most dangerous forward against the Avs, as for Kane if you make the argument about linemates Kane deserves it even more, but awesome post very honest and thoughtful. I don’t get to see a lot of the Canadian teams and I was skeptical of Nurse but he does have really solid numbers, I just think again biased that Girard and Toews have been the best defensive pairing in the league, other teams offense has just evaporated and turned into rushes the other direction.

The north is horrid. One team that’s okay.
