Marcus Pettersson Value This Offseason Plus Moves

Created by: gpmack95
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: May 10, 2021
Published: May 10, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
People can complain saying he has a bad contract because he doesn't score and had a rough start to the season, like the whole team did, but Pettersson finished the season with the highest expected-goals for share and lowest 5v5 xGA/60 of any dman on the team. Also least amount of shot attempts per 60 at even strength.

Considerable for NJ. Maybe drop the 4th to a 6th and it’s done

We add 6th and you include that 4th, done deal.

Petterson and 2022 6th for 2nd and 4th.

It's not that people think he's bad, it's that he's overpaid for what he brings to the table.

Just for the purpose of discussion, I find him to be the weirdest analytic child. Like, you look at his ice time, which has him averaging the least amount of icetime among the Pens regular dmen. To me, it indicates that he's playing sheltered minutes. However, he also starts the majority of his shifts in the D-zone, which flips the script a bit and indicates he's probably actually playing against some better matchups.

How much does OIsv% correlate to some of these things too? .941% is absolutely out of this world, and I feel like it's completely unsustainable tears of joy

I'd say the return here is probably on the mark though.

Some people on here were making him to be Jack Johnson lol

Haha, I mean, I would like to see him play some more meaningful minutes to get a better evaluation on him, but yeah, I think we can confirm that he's not Jack Johnson.

I liked this move a lot more before we got Siegnethaler, who I think will be comparable d-man.
If we re-sign Murray, its probably off the table.
If we do not re-sign Murray, I'd probably counter with a 2024 2nd

kinda curious, would we be able to make a deal involving Wood and Pettersson?

I think the biggest issue with moving Pettersson is whether it is pre-expansion or post-expansion. Most teams will not want to take him on only to have to protect him. If I am Ron Francis I'd rather have Matheson or Pettersson than Zucker, depending of course with what is on the table. The Penguins can't really afford to lose both, only having POJ to fill the roster slot on the left side.

I'd be great if Seattle took Zucker, I just really don't see that as a reality.

Before we acquired Siegenthaler, and before Bahl arrived in NHL, I think that route made sense.
Now if we re-sign Murray...I don't know where he'd fit in.
Siegs would probably be odd man out, I guess...

Smith -- Severson
Murray -- Subban
Pettersson -- Bahl

Bench: Butcher, Siegenthaler, Okhotyuk, Walsh

If we resign Murray, I think we'd hold off.
If we don't re-sign Murray, but we draft LHD in top-10, we'd probably look for shorter term option.
If we do neither, I'd be up for it.

I don’t get all the Petterson hate on this site. He’s got good underlying numbers and he’s solid when you’re watching him as well. didnt generate a ton of offence this year but we didn’t really need him to

And one of your colleagues has posted 13 constructions in which he's the main element in a trade for the likes of Rickard Rakell or Radek Faksa or Gabe Vilardi.

The truth is that this post is a very realistic evaluation, in my opinion. If Devon Toews is worth two seconds, Pettersson surely is worth a second and something extra. Even if he's never more than a second-pairing LD, this is a proper value and certainly a reasonable price.

The trade market is so interesting. Brady Skeji gets a first round pick, yet Toews only gets two seconds just a few months later

I think it’s worth noting Toews got two late second rounders, NJ’s second is an early pick and therefore worth considerably more.

Skjei was traded in Feb 2020 (pre-Covid in NA).

I mean Isles still didn’t get fair value for Toews and Skeij probably shouldn’t have fetched a first either way.

I think the flat cap played a vital part in what people determined to be “fair” value for Toews. Could be old school GMs that value size are willing to give up that last for Skjei considering the likely hood of that pick panning out. Bargain contracts are even more valuable now which is why I really question MP. He’s never shown he can be an offensive driver at any level but rather a stay at home D with okay transition stats (minus this year). At 4M that’s not good but it’s not a huge burden.
