I heard in NJ he refused to take a decreased role when they wanted to give more ice time to the younger players. I’m not sure if this 2 years ago or the beginning of last season. So it’s surprising that he would sign with the isles to be a healthy scratch most of the season.

2 years ago, he played 2nd line minutes to ease Hughes into the league. Hughes wasn't ready for those minutes

He averaged 17 min of ice time last season. That is 2nd line minutes.
