Team: 2021-22 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 11, 2021
Published: Jun. 12, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Jets off-seasons tend to fall somewhere in the range of "fairly underwhelming" to "greatly disappointing." This one comes with some disappointment, but also teases with some optimism going forward.

With a transaction (w/ Detroit) ahead of the Expansion Draft, these are the players they submit on their protection list:
F - Scheifele, Wheeler, Connor, Ehlers, Dubois, Lowry, Appleton
D - Morrissey, Pionk, Demelo
G - Hellebuyck

Trades are made to protect, manage, and maximize assets. Certain players are brought back and a few are added, mostly in depth roles. Comrie is given the backup role as "his to lose," with Berdin not far behind. Winnipeg adds a BEAST on the back-end . . . but at a price.

  1. Namestnikov, Vladislav
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Rationale - - Unable to come to terms with Copp on a new contract, the Jets decide to trade him for assets and protect Appleton. This is made possible through this trade as WPG acquires an additional forward that meets the necessary exposure requirements for the upcoming expansion draft (Namestnikov is also a player Winnipeg has shown previous interest in).

I just don't see Perfetti being ready next season and Wheeler isn't a top winger anymore, wonder if he's even a 2nd line winger at this point, this bottom six needs some more size, time to move on from Perreault, have always been a fan but it's time for a change.

Stamkos Cirelli Kuch Point Palat Cernak Sergy Hedman Vasy will be protected. that leaves Johnson McDonagh, Killon, Gourde, Foote, Maroon, Ruuta, and Joseph available + the UFA's. Very likely they take one of those main guys except Johnson without a sweetner being added

Curious does Copp play C or LW more? I see he’s listed as both, and Detroit is in dire need of center depth. The value alone for the trade is good and even better if Copp spends more time at C.

Tampa's approach to the expansion draft is probably going to look something like protecting better contracts over protecting "better" players.

He is the ultimate Swiss Army knife. He can play 2C if needed, he’s a great 3C (doesn’t play there as Lowry is a better C), he can play 2LW, 3LW, 2PP, PK. The guy does everything. He can contribute offensively and provide extremely solid defensive play too. I’m going to be sad if Copp leaves, but looks like he will as he took the Jets to arbitration last year, and likely will do it again. I’m sure he’d sign long term in Detroit. Real close to home.

How was Foote the year? I didn’t watch a lot of Tampa games. But he seems like he had a bit of an up and down year. Is he more of a 3rd pairing guy?

That was my thinking. Wasn't sure Detroit would even give up their own 2nd Rounder in any deal.

I landed on Detroit as a trade partner because they had the extra 2nd Rounders and I felt confident they'd like the player, plus I knew that Namestnikov was a target of the Jets at the 2019 trade deadline and we needed another forward in the deal under contract, etc. for exposure purposes. Guess I just wondered if the timing (and history) will play a big part in things. If his salary situation drags out and they lose a good player (Appleton) to Seattle to protect his rights, only to decide to trade him later, ultimately thought they might move him ahead of the ED.

I'm not so sure. That's business, I suppose. Your 8 skater protection forecast certainly would make it less trying on any discussion with Seattle for expansion considerations. All the stuff I read about Tampa convincing Seattle to take Johnson in the expansion draft, I'm always left asking "With what?" What does Tampa really have by way of prospects or picks that would be more enticing than selecting one of the better players Tampa inevitably exposes?

I agree on Perfetti. I wanted to think about whom else they might add on UFA, etc. but felt I'd spent WAY too much time on this mock up as it was, so just "published" it! LOL Yeah, Wheeler's definitely slowing. Like to see him moved off of Scheifele and Ehlers with him instead. See if he can build off a career year, Really hope they give Vesalainen a MUCH longer look with the big club, in a role he might actually succeed. Out of loyalty I think they'll save a spot for Perreault, so long as the price is right.

I guess the only real drawback of it would be what his salary demands are. I have some doubts he can put up the points he did this year. Still hes a good middle 6 guy and anything that raises the talent level is welcome.

You're Ron Frances who you taking

    who would You

It would depend on other teams lists and what's all available, etc., but I'd probably nab McDonagh. Even if he doesn't fall in love with the Pacific Northwest and Seattle opts to move him, his trade value alone lands the Kraken some decent assets (likely from a team looking to contend). But if D choices from other teams are solid, then Gourde probably.

    Same question to you?

Alex Killorn , I'll be thankful if Frances takes McDonagh i think in 2 years that contract will be an albatross
