Time to rebuild

Created by: rja40
Team: 2021-22 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 28, 2021
Published: Jun. 29, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Doug Armstrong has won two Cups and has reason to be a confident G.M. However, I disagree with his statement that he still thinks the Note is in a Cup-window. Injuries and Army's pride have worked to close that window, so this is an attempt - with explanations - to try and leverage other team's needs to benefit the Note long-term.

Trades
1.
STL
  1. Chytil, Filip [RFA Rights]
  2. Schneider, Braden
  3. 2021 1st round pick (NYR)
  4. 2022 1st round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Blues get a young center who looks like he could become a top six center and a RHD who helps replenish an area of need for the Blues minor leagues. The Blues very likely do not play for another Cup with ROR remaining time with the team, so they flip an asset for the future.
NYR
  1. Barbashev, Ivan [RFA Rights]
  2. O'Reilly, Ryan
Additional Details:
The Rangers are very close to being a dangerous team. What they lack they gain with this trade. They get a veteran #1 center who plays a complete game and knows what it takes to win a Cup. The Rangers also need some toughness to go along with their loads of skill, and both ROR and Barbashev bring it every night. I would argue this trade puts the Rangers in a position to overtake what will be a cap-decimated Tampa Bay for top spot in the East.
2.
STL
  1. Broberg, Philip
  2. Neal, James
  3. 2021 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Of course few teams want Neal, but the Note would have to take on his contract in order for Edmonton to navigate the salary cap with this deal. Blues price for taking Neal is the promising Broberg who is likely at least one year away from donning an NHL jersey full-time.
EDM
  1. Sanford, Zachary [RFA Rights]
  2. Tarasenko, Vladimir
Additional Details:
Edmonton is very top-heavy on their four lines, and that will only get heavier if the Nuge signs elsewhere. Tarasenko would have to waive his NTC to do this, but I think Oilers fans would salivate at having McDavid, Draisaitl and Tarasenko peppering shots at a goalie on the powerplay. His acquisition also deepens their four lines, as each line can drop one notch, placing Yamamoto and Puli as RWers on the middle six lines. Sanford automatically fills the third or fourth line LW abyss. This move also allows Edmonton to try an move Kassian's contract for value or let him entice Seattle in the expansion draft.
3.
STL
  1. Formenton, Alex
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
The Note receives a LWer who looks like he can play middle six minutes.
OTT
  1. Dunn, Vince [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Dunn would slot behind Chabot very nicely, and the Senators deal from an area of strength to address an area of weakness with a young LHD who fits right in with the age range of the team.

As I've heard from Multiple Sens fans.....No reason for Formenton to be traded and I agree with them. I think Sens Decline this

If we were indeed heading that route, these would be some quality returns.

I dont think the cup window is closed, but it's closing much faster than it should. A quick retool could bring us back. Dump Schenn before his contract becomes a detriment.

Does it make any sense to move Krug or Faulk and keep Dunn?

The Blues are NOT trading Dad, so I have no earthly idea why you'd even go there. And Ottawa isn;t doing that.

I'd love to move Krug. You want him?

That's too much for 2 years of ROR, imo. If there were 2 more years on that deal, I would take it and run. as is, I think we could make a bigger trade. I'd want Dunn's rights and offer 3rd and Gauthier.

If we didn't have Ty Smith, maybe.
Need more defensive d-man. Really need help in two areas
(1) getting puck out of own zone
(2) shot-blocking

(and to lesser degree, need righties over lefties)

You're right to slot Formenton into your top 6 because I believe he has that kind of potential - which is why OTT turns this down.
Sanderson is really not far away from owning that 2nd pairing anyway, so there's no DIRE need for Ottawa to make this move.
I could see the SJS '21 2nd + the TBL '22 2nd, but even that feels pricey to me... it would depend on the kind of contract Dunn would be looking for.

He's asking for a 2nd and a middle 6 forward for him. Goat has more upside and I was imagining it as a part of the Rags trade above, who's primary asset is 2 years of ROR which is not worth 4 firsts. I would be up for paying more for Dunn separately. as a package, that's the best return anyone will give you. 5 first young round assets, and a 3rd for 2 years or ROR, Dunn's rights, and Barbashev. In fact, if ROR doesn't work out or he can't be re-signed, it would be a huge loss for the Rangers.

Dad is absolutely out of the question, so there's no use to even talk about him. We're not trading our captain, end of story.

As for the Dunn thing, Goat does not have more upside than Formenton, who's a much better skater, two years younger and a bonafide 1st line talent. Not even sure how you figure that.

The blues don't have a problem trading their captains vs letting them walk for nothing. Formenton is a first line talent? According to whom?

1- They tried to re-sign him, but stupid Army's refusal to give an NMC ruined the deal. And obviously failing to re-sign someone and trading someone are not the same animal. And the city would tear down the building and string Army up if they traded Dad. Bet on that.

2- Just off the top of my head, me and Pronman. I don;t remember who else, but I've seen others rate him as such. The kid skates like the wind, is top notch off the puck and has loads of skill on it. Top line is his ceiling, and yeah, not everybody reaches that, but I'm pretty sure Ottawa have tons of faith in him. I know I do. Anyway, the Sens are not making that trade, and the Blues are not taking a 3rd and Goat, so this is all just banter.

if Formenton hits the 1st line it will be about his ceiling... projected ceiling currently is 2nd line LW with 50-60 points upside, more realistically mid-6 LW with 40-50 points upside. Has McDavid's speed but not all the skills to endup on the top-3

Heh. Falling short of McJesus does not preclude one from being a 1st liner. And 50-60 points with his two-way game is 1st line quality these days.

Yes, but the contracts are the issue from my perspective.

Why on earth would the Sens trade Formenton for ANOTHER LD? And to add a 2nd?

Chabot is top LD, no question.
Brannstrom is 2nd LD
Sanderson, 5th overall pick, is gonna join after NCAA and he’s a LD.

Why would they get Dunn to play bottom pair LD?

Your argument makes sense if you're sold on Brannstrom. I'm not quite yet.

Probably cuz your not a Sens fan and never watch him play. When Chabot was out the last 5 or so games, Brännström became the 1LD and was great. His offensive production is already better then Chabots was at the same age.

Well, I'm not a Sens fan, so you're correct there. What I have seen of him is limited, and if you watch them every game like I do the Blues, you'd likely have a better perspective on him than I would. From what I've seen though, I'm not yet sold on him being a second pairing. That of course could change, but time will tell.
