Mis using Laine to the point he whined his way out to acquire Dubios (because his daddy in the organization) isn't a little weird) acquiring Kevin Hayes for a playoff run to a few weeks later being forced to move Trouba for their own pick and pionk isn't a little weird. I'm not claiming any of these trades as bad ideas but it is a little weird in the way the organization is kind of forced into deals because players don't want to live and play in Winnipeg. That's what I mean by weird odd things. Also the trade I proposed provides a stable 3/4 dman with a little term on a more than reasonable cap hit and certainly value at a million cash per year along with a cost controlled top 6 potential prospect with about 6 - 7 years of control.
Lets go through all of those so-called examples:
- Laine's most frequent centreman in his last full season was Scheifele.
- Laine wanted out plus the Jets weren't going to pay his rumorued $9 - $10 million pre-COVID ask. So the Jets traded a RW for a C in the same draft class and Dubois has 1 more year of team control.
- Hayes was a deadline deal acquisition on an expiring contract. Teams do that.
- Trouba wanted out for several years, as his (now) wife wanted to practice medicine in the US. Jets were given a list of one team to trade to and got Pionk and a 1st which has worked out very well.
- Winnipeg is a city that is always shows up on no-trade lists because it is not a great place to be in the winter. That has been true forever and is neither odd nor weird, it just is.
Regarding the trade idea, the Jets give up their best defenseman (who is still under team control), for a defenseman who is not as good as the one they are losing plus futures. For a team that wants to make a deeper push into the playoffs, that doesn't make sense. I bet Holl has Winnipeg on his no-trade list too.
