Martinez replacement - be brutally honest idc

Created by: KingsLover
Team: 2021-22 Vegas Golden Knights
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 16, 2021
Published: Jul. 16, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It's hard to gauge Giordano's value especially with reports that he'd be the one exposed in the Seattle expansion draft, but with the heavy retention id assume Calgary could get a 1st and solid prospects for him. I might take the 2nd out because Cormier is a really solid prospect and has really good offensive upside, but I kept it in just in case. Honestly could make the pick conditional on if Vegas reaches final 4 again or the Cup finals.
Trades
VGK
  1. Giordano, Mark ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Giordano has kind of been a warrior over the past decade as the man has averaged north of 23 minutes a night over that time. I think his struggles in the postseason have comes more from having to be the best d-man on the ice, when I believe he's better off being the 2nd (or 3rd in Vegas' case) best defensemen on the team. At 3.75mil even at age 38 is a great contract for him to be on. While I think getting a legit number 1 centre should be on the top of their list, outside of Eichel that player isn't on the market. Getting somebody to replace the hole that Alec Martinez leaves is something they'll need. I like Hague and Whitecloud but I wouldn't want to rely on them to play 2nd pair minutes come playoff time.
CGY
  1. Cormier, Lukas
  2. Elvenes, Lucas
  3. Holden, Nick
  4. 2021 1st round pick (VGK)
  5. 2022 2nd round pick (VGK)
  6. 2022 5th round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
The Flames potentially could lose Giordano for nothing in the expansion draft as they're going to protect Hanifin, Tanev and Andersson, at least in this situation they get two solid picks and prospects for the guy.

Giordano is still effective but that's way too much.

You could get Gio for a 2nd. CGY is losing him for free so they have no leverage otherwise and teams don't have that kind of cap space to bid high for him.

How would you adjust the trade? I also thought it was a little too much but didn't want to undersell either.

They'll likely lead the way on getting Suter if they can't get Marty to sign. But I think Marty will sign $4.5Mx2 as a reup.

Well at his normal salary I fully agree with you, but if SEA picks him I guarantee they'd hold back about this much salary and could get a hefty return for him as he's still a decent top pair guy, and would be an amazing 2nd pair guy for pretty much any team.

lol I forgot about Suter, yeah if they could get him it'd be better than sending draft capital and prospects for Gio.

It really isn't relevant. Cgy has 24 hours to move him and the cap retention right now is MORE money than a non retained Gio at the TDL.

No leverage is no leverage, and I don't see how a team would give up more than a 2nd for him. Especially considering you could get an equivalent Dmen in UFA for less Cap

I'm chiming in at $4M. Remember Nevada doesn't have state income tax.

He'll get $4M is he is signed for 3 years, which they may do. He could move down the lineup and still be effective. But I don't know, they guy has to try and get paid.

Yeah, I was going to add this as an edit: "Plus, they could sign him for 3 years on a $5-$4-$3 deal so he wouldn't be hard to bury if he falls off a cliff in the last year."

Or just sign Suter for like $2m

edit: it also looks like Edler will be testing FA, so he could be an option as well -- not sure what his price tag will look like though.

I like the idea, but if CGY is gonna lose him they probably want his entire cap hit off the books. Otherwise this is the idea, but it would cost much less.

If we are loosing Gio i would rather move the full cap than get a late 1st. Good offer though, probably fair considering its to a division rival
