I'd argue that having a 44 year old defenseman on your top pairing is probably not the best strategy.

He's a first ballot Hall of Famer. He's just not a 20+ minute guy at age 44. Sign him and play him 12 minutes per night and that would be a good idea. Put him on your top pairing and Toronto probably doesn't even make the playoffs.

Excluding the rest of the garbage. Why would the Canucks ever trade Pettersson, Miller, and a 1st for an overpaid winger, a pending UFA, and a prospect that can't get regular playing time
