Lafreniere is still a #1 pick, in his 2nd season, that came with very high expectations.

No offense to Caufield, but they'd be adding a lot more than that.

It would have to be something unrealistic to entertain trading Lafreniere.

Yes 1st OA picks have a lot more leeway and benefit of the doubt than mid 1st round picks struggling

If Caufield was showing he was going to be DeBrincat (seems very unlikely), then maybe the Rangers would consider but they don't even think about this

I'm sorry but it would be Suzuki + Caufield at the moment

Or you wait like 2 more years and you could then have him for much cheaper if he doesn't break out. But then, why would you want him?

suzuki for Laf would be a hard thing to swallow for a team dying for franchise centers so not sure how suzuki plus caufield would do anything but swing this deal completely in the rangers favor. Completely agree that caufield for Laf isnt, and wont ever be a one for one, but the add on mtl's side is not Suzuki thats for sure.

you realize that their numbers are almost exactly the same right?! Cole's ppg is 0.30 Laf's is 0.37 ppg, Goals per game are Cole 0.19 Laf 0.22. The only real measurable difference is that Laf has played 50 more games than Cole. Even their differentials are similar Laf -8, Cole -7. Cole has the advantage of playoff experience though which is more valuable than the 50 games more that Laf has played. I don't think that there is anything that needs to be added based on career numbers so far. I also don't see the point in trading either player for the other. Both are wingers, both have elite talent and both have the potential for being elite. They are basically going to have similar careers, there is no point in this thread because of that.

I think the Canadiens have too many right wingers and why not try and get a potential franchise players born in Quebec

We do have too many RW but only 2 capable of scoring 25+ goals (Caufield and Gallagher), only one is young enough to warrant keeping through a rebuild if that is the route the Habs take. Basically you are taking our elite scoring RWer and moving him to the left just because the player you want comes from Quebec. This is a lateral move at best and with as many games as Laf has played and the way Rags fans are going off that he is looking like a bust, I would rather keep CC.

If things stay as they are at this moment (Lafrenière semi bust, Caufield near bust, Suzuki elite #2 center) then yes it is heavily in Rangers' favor

But, like I already said, 1st OVERALL PICKS are projected to become huge star players and have the BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT until they don't.

As of NOW, Rangers won't give you Lafreniere for anything less than Suzuki and Caufield

If you want him for less than that, you'll have to wait and hope he doesn't break out

and i'm saying i dont think i would want Laf for Suzuki straight up, habs still need to add at center. I understand a team isnt going to just give away a 1OA pick but thats why this deal never happens. Laf has 77 reg season games played so cant really call him a semi best thats way too early. And Caufield has played in 26 reg season games so thats insane to even consider saying he is a bust.

Exactly, both teams don't do this. Rangers for obvious reasons and Habs because way too risky to lose Suzuki if Lafreniere doesn't become a star, and that's even if Caufield doesn't become much

Oh and the semi bust/bust thing was obviously more a caricature/picture of their actual play, that's why I have used "at this moment"

Off course, I'm expecting it to change in the near future

But I understand if you need explanations because people say a lot of ridiculous things.
