Fixing the Oilers

Created by: FrolikMyBalls
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 12, 2021
Published: Dec. 12, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think all these moves are pretty reasonable and they would make the Oilers one of the best teams in the league. If somehow there are any salary issues with this current roster, I'm sure Chicago would retain enough of Kubalik's contract.

Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Kubalik, Dominik
  2. 2022 4th round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
Kubalik is struggling. Chicago shakes things up and acquires a first round pick for him.
CHI
  1. Kassian, Zack
  2. 2022 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Oilers acquire a pure goal scorer for the top 6 and get rid of Kassian.
2.
EDM
  1. Sharangovich, Yegor
  2. 2022 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Devils bring offence to their blueline in exchange for a struggling sophomore.
NJD
  1. Barrie, Tyson
Additional Details:
Oilers bring in more forward depth and make room for Bouchard
3.
EDM
  1. Varlamov, Semyon
Additional Details:
Varlamov has been struggling and is now completely buried because of how good Sorokin is. Islanders figure they'd rather have the second round pick in the strong 2023 draft and cap space this offseason. Koskinen is a serviceable backup.
NYI
  1. Koskinen, Mikko
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Oilers acquire an established starting goalie so that issue is addressed for the next few seasons.
4.
EDM
  1. Gostisbehere, Shayne
Additional Details:
Arizona gets a 2nd and a young former 2nd for ghost. No reason for the Coyotes not to keep the tank rolling, so this trade makes sense.
ARI
  1. Lavoie, Raphael
  2. Turris, Kyle
  3. 2022 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Oilers round out their D core without damaging their roster.
5.
EDM
    Future considerations
    BUF
    1. Tippett, Dave
    Additional Details:
Firing Tippett is the only way the Oilers can ever achieve greatness. Well, that and trading Keith...

Speaking of trading Keith, next offseason for this team would pretty much be impossible without doing it. But, as this team stands, it's within the cap and ready to absolutely torment the rest of the NHL.

I like most of the trades but I'm not too sold on varlamov. Koskinen has been fine this year and hopefully with smith coming back soon, he'd take the ease off of koskinen a little. Plus taking on the varlamov contract doesn't help the oilers next season as they need to re-sign yams + pulju and they have the nurse extension kicking in too. I'd much rather run with skinner next year to give him the needed nhl experience so that he can take over or be a tandem goalie when smith is gone. Also as much as I don't like tippet's choices, the team was not built very well and the pieces he has to work with aren't the best. I'd see how the moves would improve the team before firing him.

Trading Sharangovich probably depends on how Holtz develops. If we did, It would be for younger RD than Barrie.

Welcome to CapFriendly! Sometimes it's not too friendly.

Sharangovich is having a better year than Yamamoto (though both are struggling), and I don't think that you'll be improving the defense with that trade. As maligned as Barrie is, especially as a defender, replacing him with a newly-promoted rookie playing on his off-side doesn't seem to me to be an upgrade. You guys are giving up more than 3 goals per game, and only Las Vegas (just one more goal in 26 games) and the hapless Coyotes are doing worse.

Kubalik isn't a dump. He is a 26 year old RFA with 93 points in 151 NHL outings. Hawks aren't moving him for pennies in the dollar.

    Can't argue with that.

To me, Barrie almost serves as a stop gap until Ty Smith can fully assume his role as a mostly offensive middle pairing d-man. The Devils blue line really could use better breakout passes and a solid transitional defender provides that. I'd say the devils are definitely looking to start improving quickly and competing for the cup, and Barrie definitely puts them closer to winning and further from drafting 1st overall again. You can't keep waiting on young players to come up forever, and at some point you end up bringing in older players. Barrie is only 30, and should provide solid play for the remainder of his contract and hopefully a few years afterwards. Also, Subban probably walks this offseason, and barrie takes the pressure off of finding a replacement.

Honestly, I get what you're saying I might have undervalued Kubalik by a bit. Maybe Edmonton sends a 1st and 2nd there or throws in a prospect. However, Kubalik has declined steadily since his rookie year, and has struggled immensely this season. I'm not saying the Hawks should trade him, but I'm saying I could see it happening. With Kane and Toews both way past their prime, I think they should try to get some draft picks in the next two drafts and get a solid pool built up. Management may realize this and trade off players with moveable contracts they are willing to trade. The emergence of Brandon Hagel makes Kubalik less vital to the team and I could see him being traded for the right price.

Tatar would be the option. Not Sharangovich.

To add to this you completely low-balled his qualifying offer is 4M and he’ll want 5M
