If Nylander is being traded, it needs to either be:

i.) For another roster player
ii.) On draft day if you're confident you can get a high end prospect

just for clarity here you are essentially trading nylander to keep bunting. No contract signing you have with the sole exception of Jack Campbell is worth william nylander.

Predicting a players trade value 2 years into the future and which players would be available is next to impossible.

I know Marner is the popular choice of the big 4 to get moved, but unless Marner gets traded in 2022-23 season, his NMC kicks in. Nylander didn't get a NMC, just a 10 team no trade list.

I think Dubas sticks with the 4some until all their contracts are up, with Matthews and Nylander first up in 2024. Than Marner and J.T. in 2025.

Bunting and Campbell would be signed in 2022, Nylander's contract is up for renewal in 2024, there is no connection between the moves at all.

We all seen Dubas get burned by UFAs walking away without any trade return. Dubas might want to try a different approach when Nylander's dad and player agent played hard to get, or did we all forget that drama 3 years ago >?

I remember a player getting market value and fighting for term so he could help ensure he remained a Leaf for as long as he could.

In all likelihood the big 4 costs the same or less in total when they are re-signed in 3/4 years.

While I think Nylander is logical player to be traded for good value, the Leafs would only do it for needed cap space to fill out their roster. Leafs believe they will be contenders for the next few years, so Nylander won't traded due to bogged contract negotiations. Contending teams don't sell their upcoming UFAs

They canes would want nothing to do with Nylander. Especially at the cost of 2 first rounders. Canes are just better off just developing their own guys or trading for players who aren’t as expensive as Nylander, or players who like to play hard to get. Canes are a contender, and we don’t need someone who would probably just disappear in the playoffs.

Nylander is a good regular season player, but his post season attributes aren't always great. He was good against Montreal in fairness.

Carolina historically does not do rentals, especially not under this management group.

That is the least gritty / truculent Leafs of all time.

Need more size and power for any 3rd / 4th line in the league. 3 undersized young wingers will get run over
