Best Possible Trade Deadline

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2021-22 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 25, 2021
Published: Dec. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm trying to be as reasonable as possible here (i.e., not favoring Arizona) . . .

I can't imagine that Arizona isn't on Dadonov's ten-team no-trade list or that he would waive it, but one can dream . . .

The Kessel trade is made at the deadline when the Rangers are in a playoff spot and seeking to solidify their position. The premise is that Kessel might be interested in going to NY for one last shot at playoff glory. (I've seen a reasonable ACGM offer a 2022 second and 2022 fourth for him, so my offer may be light.)

The Armia trade is made at the trade deadline in contemplation of next year's cap floor problem, which I've illustrated by putting the guys I think won't be back next year on the IR list. (Obviously, they would fill out this year's roster. And some might be additional movers at the trade deadline for modest returns.)

The Islanders trade doesn't become official until Ladd plays a game in the 2022-2023 season, of course, but is included here for prospective purposes.

I also cannot imagine competent management weakening this team further by trading Jakob Chychrun.

I wouldn't give up a pick for Armia because of next year's cap. Push comes to shove, I think Arizona will just be able to sign enough mid level free agents and reach the floor. I also expect they'll add a cap dump or two in the offseason.

You do not want to trade Farinacci, He will be the future captain of your team especially for an overpaid player in Dadanov who vegas will need to get rid of.

Montreal doesn't need to move Armia, we are not hurting for cap space either this year or next. Also I do not see Montreal going into a full rebuild so we also don't need to sell off assets. We have too many veteran contracts signed to term to go full rebuild. If anything we will be looking at a retool for next year and perhaps the year after before we decide to go nuclear and blow things up. Armia and Lehkonen are both valuable peices to our short term future.

Nah I think the new direction would choose to move on with Armia & Ylönen will take is spot

If you think that a third-line 28-year-old* making $3.4 million for three more years and has all of 5 points this season is a "valuable piece for [y]our short-term future," then God bless you. And the purpose of the trade had nothing whatsoever to do with creating cap space for Montreal, which was the last thing I was thinking about.

Yeah. Armia is good, but our defense still needs work and those dollars may be needed elsewhere.

If creating cap space was the last thing you were thinking about, then why treat Armia as a cap dump? Why add the 2 3rd's, if it is simply to get Arizona to the cap floor then trade a 3rd from Arizona to the Habs for him. No need for the picks from the Habs.

I'm not treating him as a cap dump; I'm treating him as a guy who has little to no value, especially to the Canadiens except as filler. Just as an exercise, compare him to all 12 of the bottom-6 players on the Ducks and Kings.

I think Shea Weber's contract could make some sense for Arizona. Depending on whether he officially retires or not. Lots of cap. Low actual salary.

The problem is that unlike all other teams that take on "dead men's salaries," Arizona is also short warm bodies to put on the ice. I don't think that they're in a position to simply take on contracts for "non-hockey" reasons, especially given their financial situation.
