Best offer I think we could make for Miller

Description
Wild are a team in the mix of the supposed Miller sweepstakes.

Our beat writer says to "keep an eye on JT Miller" in his latest podcast (link below, Miller talk starts at 22:00). He mentions the connection between Guerin and Rutherford, Guerin and Allvin who was previously with the Penguins while Guerin was there, and Boudreau who is the former Wild head coach.

This trade stings, it's a lot to give up for a player that we won't be able to re-sign in a year, but Miller would be a huge addition to our top 6 between Fiala and Boldy.

MIN
  1. Miller, J.T. ($1,500,000 retained)

If you think other teams can offer more, that's fine, this is just the maximum I think we could offer for Miller with a little retention.

The quantity is very good here but I think the quality can be beat by other teams.

I think that's pretty fair value, but who knows, I guess another team like NY could outbid that

How is Miller at C?
I think he is best suited as winger right?

Target a C instead bud.

I've watched 3 or 4 Canucks games this season with Miller playing at center and I was very impressed. I think he'd be just fine playing the role full-time. The only available players that are really full-time centers are Stastny and Tierney and personally if we're buying I'd like to see us acquire better players. You could argue Hertl is more of a full-time center, but he has played a bit on the wing and I have a feeling SJS will extend him now that Kane is gone.

Other options are Giroux and Pavelski who both can play center, but I know Giroux hardly plays center anymore and I don't believe Pavelski has really been playing center in Dallas.

Miller is definitely my favorite option when you consider his contract, versatility, and additional year on his deal.

I think you are all right. Rangers are overflowing with RD which the Canucks badly need, they're better trade partners than us. I'd imagine Schneider specifically would be a lot more appealing to the Canucks than Lambos. If the Rangers are willing to part with him and a 1st I think you take that over this offer.

Like I said it stings. But Miller is a PPG player, can play all 3 forward positions (and has looked great at center when I've seen him), is great on the PK, great on the PP, and plays the exact type of hockey Dean likes (responsible, physical, fast, and skilled). And his contract is extremely team-friendly, especially if Vancouver is willing to retain.

Getting 2 playoff runs with him only adds to his value to a team acquiring him. I really have mixed feelings because deadline deals rarely work out (1 team wins the Cup after all). On the one hand, the Wild are playing pretty good this year and a legit center to give them a 1-2-3 lineup of Kaprizov/Hartman/Zucc, Boldy/2C/Fiala, Greenway/Ek/Foligno would make them a team with 3 lines that can score. On the other hand, the last time the team was in this type of position they went out and acquired Martin Hanzal and ruined the team's chemistry. I get that's largely because Boudreau insisted on playing Hanzal on a line over Haula who had been playing well with the linemates he had on that line (Nino and Pominville?).

Your still giving up too much for JT, sorry it's just how it is. At max you'd get a prospect and a first, it's just the reality

That doesn't change the fact that it's too much, it's just the reasons you want him.

Eichel got Tuch, Krebs, 1st, 2nd. Lambos is on par with Krebs, 1st and 2nd are on par with 1st and 2nd. So you're proposing the difference between Millers value and Eichels value is the difference between Tuch and Greenway, and that's just ridiculous.

IMO the whole “he’s a winger, not a center” argument is very weak. Especially in context of where he’d presumably play. Boldy is a winger that plays like a center. Fiala is an exceptional play driver and loves to posses the puck. Miller is great on draws, positionally versatile and responsible defensively. There’s nothing about that line that suggests it has to be a strictly traditional center in the middle. It’s such a lazy take.

All that said, I agree with the others that this is too much. I don’t think we can put together an offer that wins but doesn’t completely setback the franchise. If the buyouts were even a little more manageable, I think things would be different. But given what they are, I just think we’re forced to stay the course of draft and develop.
