A free Vesalainen, Detroit takes that and runs.

Why does Detroit do this? I don't see a point in paying for a 30-something year old Dman on a $6Mx3 contract while taking on a huge project like Vesalainen when we already have a logjam of forwards...

Because they need LD for the upcoming season and after. Vesalainen as a throw in is fine, don't need him but he could be used as trade bait later or maybe he develops into something.

The Jets aren't deep enough at forward or defense to give away two players for nothing.

I like your support that we could beat PIT and CAR. That’s a tough road but I like your optimism

Develops into something? The dude is 31 when the puck drops in September. This didn't work with Leddy and I don't want to bet on it here either.

You could likely get a 3rd + 4th/5th for Schmidt alone… no reason to add in Vesalainen

Vesalainen is young still, he could develop into something. Schmidt would be a stop gap, who do you expect to play LD for the next few years? Rookies? We need a couple veterans on the back end and Schmidt is better than some other options and shouldn't cost too much to acquire.

They mean Vesalainen still could develop into something, not Schmidt.

Schmidt is a good defender that can run PP2 for two years until Edvinsson is ready to take over. He's also a lot better defensively than Leddy ever was. Schmidt will also get us a better return when traded in two years time than what we paid considering the rising cap.

When it comes to forwards we do indeed have a logjam on the Red Wings but there's a huge deficit in Grand Rapids and at this price it's worth it to try to sneak him through waivers.

I'd take Schmidt over Pettersson especially if he comes with Vesalainen for the same price or less than Pettersson!
