Moves to defence because we let in too many goals

Description
We have young guys coming and we need to trust the process. That being said, to improve we should add to defence and it would pay back in wins and improved goaltending as well.

”Russian Bear” Lyubushkin comes as a UFA to solidify our back end. He playes PK and a shutdown role with fellow russian Gavrikov and is a big physical part of our d-core securing leads etc. We are in a situation where we can pay more than Toronto can pay for Lyubushkins services.

Other D acquisition is from Boston. They can get rid of one D because they traded for Hampus Lindholm and because of that they have 4 LD now.

Basically I want our D-core to be harder to play against by adding two defence minded physical defenceman to our top6. Even with these additions, we have great puck moving D’s with Werenski and Boqvist and Gavrikov can play with the puck too.. He is putting up a career year in points this season! Also Boqvist gets sheltered a bit with these moves because he is not ready defensively. And lets not forget that Jake Christiansen is a good puck moving D and he is on his way too.

With these moves we are set to improve next year and keep building.

Holy **** that’s a big number on werenski, both adds probably aren’t going to move the needle on the blueline, work in progress will need to hopefully find something in the lottery to upgrade blueline

instead would you be open to a trade of
Forbort+4th for bean

Bs still lack offence from the blue line and with zboril most likely gone and potentially a reilly to LA or NYI trade Bs could potentially want a young offensive dman like Bean

I’d rather hold onto bean than just break even with him.
Ilya is my ideal off-season target. He’d be the ideal fit with werenski or gavrikov. He’s someone I would overpay for. Our dzone defense is terrible while our rush defense is fairly good considering our personal. Ilya specializes in the dzone while being weaker off the rush.

Isles would give u a second for Bean tmr lol. Then they would scratch him for Chara and Greene.

I think CBJ will hold on to Bean, but i think they shouldnt.

If you keep him you have to downgrde him to 3rd pair and that moves Boqvist with Gavrikov.. basically we have the similar type of defence as this year. It doesnt change the defence enough and you cant have a shutdown pair run by gavrikov.

Bean and Peeke have actually been a good pair this season (in a limited role) so using them as a 3rd pair might not be a bad option, Gavrikov and Boqvist have also been a solid pair this season. The problem is who to put on the top pair with Werenski, originally I was thinking Peeke, but lately he has struggled with the top pair. I think if we can get a player like Mayfield, Manson or Lyubushkin it can give us options for a few years to develop someone. I also see Columbus drafting a RHD in the 1st round this season (Nemec or Juricik) who in 2 years should easily fill that role. It’ll also be interesting to see how much Columbus sees in Coulemans or at how NHL ready he is.

Last note, I’d expect Columbus to sign Marchenko for next season too, not just Johnson.

I get that the Gavrikov-Boqvist and Bean-Peeke pairings have been okay but is it enough improvement to bring just one guy in? I mean Peeke is a work in progress and Boqvist and Bean need to improve so much defensively..

That is most likely to happen but i personally think they should add two guys and get rid of one that struggles defensively.

I don’t disagree, but I also don’t see it happening. I don’t think Columbus is in much of a hurry to be ultra competitive, I think they are in a position of give it a few years get some top end draft talent and then go for it. I think, or I hope at least, Jarmo has realized it’s not good enough to be getting 10-20 draft picks, we need to get some top 5 picks picks to build around to make the team ultra competitive.
