Best Case Scenario

Created by: tsyls
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 26, 2022
Published: Apr. 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In my best case scenario for the Winnipeg Jets, they retool over the upcoming offseason and make some shakeups to the core. Dillon and Schmidt are still likely moved to allow for Heinola and Samberg to play on a consistent basis. Scheifele is the main shakeup, I think the writing is already on the wall. I also believe that their could be a change in the leadership core. I’m not sure they’d strip wheeler, but in my best case scenario they hire a new coaching staff which could lead to leadership changes. I’m lost as to what their options are in terms of coaching, I’m sure there are plenty of great candidates, I’m just not the biggest fan of continually recycling coaches. I’d say they should go after Pascal Vincent to take over the coaching position.

  1. Gardiner, Jake
  2. Jarvis, Seth
  3. 2023 1st round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
I’m sure Carolina fans won’t like this and that’s okay, I’m open to suggestions. I just was thinking that if they underperform in the playoffs this year they might be looking to make some changes and win now while their window is open. Let me know what you think.

  1. 2023 3rd round pick (DET)
3.
WPG
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Seattle is a team with a plethora of picks including winnipegs 2nd in 2023. I wonder if they’d be interested in this type of deal.
SEA
  1. Stanley, Logan
Additional Details:
I’m not sold on Stanley, I’m not concerned about moving him as the jets have a logjam at LD. Hopefully they can get a 2nd back for him as he’s still a useful player and could develop into a really solid defender.

Hopefully, if there are hockey gods, Gardiner would block the trade. Jarvis would be a nice start though.

I just took gardiner for cap reasons. Jarvis and a 1st is pretty nice, I would like to ask for more but I didn’t want to get too greedy hahah.

would take more than that to take Schmidt. 4 years left on that deal is probably the killer. Yzerman has a fresh start with contracts after this year. I dont see him helping salary capped teams for cheap and likely would only take players with 1-2 years left on these types of deals.

I figured that was why. I'd just be keeping my fingers crossed that Gardiner would say no to being involved.grin

Interesting. He’s only got 3 years, and from all the probing I’ve done with this almost all wings fans have said yes. Schmidt would be a perfect mentor for the young guys on DET and they could use a veteran LD.

Schmidt is 3x$5.95M left on his deal, and he's still a productive player. He can play either side and lets Detroit *not* have to rush up guys like Edvinsson once DeKeyser and Staal walk this summer. As of right now the most experienced D the Wings have signed for next season is all 295 games of Jordan Oesterle - not exactly the type of veteran leadership you'd want for a D-corps with so many young guys prepared to step up. Giving up a 3rd to get Schmidt & a wild card prospect in Vesalainen is actually pretty fair value.

Jarvis isn’t moving unless its in a deal the Canes cant refuse.
Scheifele is the Skinner of centers. We ran him out of town because of his general refusal to play both ways equally. Kotkaniemi would play center before Scheifele. We wouldn’t pay that level of a price for a guy who wouldn’t be a 100% fit for us.

I get it for sure. Was rod coaching when that skinner stuff happened? I feel like with rod scheifele would definitely be in the right mindset. He was incredible the entire 17-18 season. He can be a dominating play driver when he’s on. Not to mention he performs at a high level in the playoffs.

Maybe the fit just isn’t right with CAR.

Lets be real, any addition on the D for Detroit is big. that being said.. I just don't think his contract is something Yzerman would take on. He is decent, but I think there are other options that would better suit Detroit. Plenty of 35 Year old FAs this year that would be cheap as well as resigning Stall for 1 more year are options I would take to get leadership roles from veterans. If your paying me to take him.. I am likely going to have to pay to move him. Thats my theory.
Also, do you make this trade if the Carolina trade doesnt go through? you have the money to keep him on your roster if everything here goes through. So why move him? Again, your not moving him becuase you want to add value somewhere else. Your moving him to dump his contract.

Carolina has Niedereiter, Cole and Trocheck coming off the books they could let them go and fit Scheifele in, if they let a couple of those guys go.

I really want Jarvis, but Canes fans don't like my 23' 1st, Jarvis, and Heimosalmi proposal

Once again, anything involving Jarvis is a no go. I like Sheifele, but not to the point of giving up Jarvis. Besides, Sheifele wouldn’t be a C in Rods system. So if he ends up in Carolina, he would need to get used to the wing. The C core next season will almost certainly be Aho, KK, Staal, Drury, with other options such as Domi, Stepan, Lorentz, and Martinook to switch into a C role if the need arises. Sheifele would be a huge offensive lift for the Canes, but if he continues to refuse to play both sides of the puck equally, he would be a terrible fit. Everyone on the current Canes roster is either already good at the defensive side of the puck or has taken a few steps forward in developing their defensive game.

There are so many similarities between Sheifele and Skinner, and I really doubt that Sheifele would be the best fit in the Canes system.

Rod was an assistant. Shipped to Buffalo the year he took over as HC.

we can afford Scheifele's cap but its the fact that the eye test says he doesnt try on defense and the metric support it. Evolving hock has him in the bottom percentage for the league on defense.

I'd imagine Brind'Amour would be the coach that could get Scheif to put in some effort. IMO he's one of the best coaches in the league, who can get a lot out of his players.

maybe but you dont pay that level of a price hoping a coach can get more out of a player. You take a low dollar risk for someone like that not paying your top 6 RW on an ELC and a 1st rounder for it.

No actually I really like Schmidt and would keep him. I just think there’s more value in giving his spot in the lineup to a younger guy like Samberg/Heinola. That’s the only reason I’m moving him lol.

Gonna be interesting to see if Perfetti ever ends up at center with this team, their track record says not likely.
