Old school Fiala comps

Description
There are not many comps in cap era that fit directly to Fiala today.

I have been using Buchnevich and Reinhart since they are the most recent trades of pending RFA's coming off good seasons.

But here are a couple of fun ones from back before salary cap. Enjoy!

    Jeremy Roenick was a 26-year old restricted free agent and three-time 100-pt scorer who had yet to come to contract terms with Chicago. They traded him in summer of 1996 for Alex Zhamnov, Craig Mills and a 1st round draft pick in 1997 (#16). Zhamnov was also an RFA offensive center, but was likely to sign smaller contract since he had battle injuries the last few seasons. Mills was a late round pick enjoying a breakout D+1 season in OHL.

      2022 5th round pick (MIN)

      In 1995, Buffalo had some financial constraints as they had recently gave Hasek and Lafontaine big deals. Mogilny had just been 22nd overall in scoring but needed a new contract. So Buffalo sent him (with a 5th) to Vancouver for Mike Wilson, Michael Peca and #14 pick in the draft. The two prospects were good ones (top-50, but not top-20). Peca was a slight-framed, right-handed center and former 40th overall pick, who had come alive after his draft with 113-pt season in OHL. Wilson was a defensively sound LHD and recent #20 overall pick, but appeared to be developing more slowly that some had hoped.

      Lmao hawks decline so dam fast. Fiala isn't worth that but even if he was, a rebuilding team isn't giving up a first that has a pretty good chance at being Bedard.

      Seems like a pretty crazy couple of guys to comp to, no? Mogilny had a 76 goals season under his belt, and as you said, JR had 3 100+ pt seasons prior to being traded. Fiala's best offensive season was this year, which was his first point per game year.

      That being said, my first thought was the Kessel to the Leafs trade, which is f*ckin' madness anyway tears of joy

      It is, he's specifically trolling Wild fans because of the ongoing debate about Fiala and what he should bring back if moved.

      It's starting to feel like he's decided to go the petty route.

      The trades aren't meant to be realistic. They're meant to insite other fanbases because Wild fans don't want to be lowballed or other teams scraps for Fiala because his comps don't work or apply to the situation at hand.

      Roenick was also a contract that couldn't be signed.

      Kessel was a lot younger and had less control in process.

      Was just trying some fun comps for young star players that are unable to re-sign with current clubs.

      Relax...it is just some fun historical comparables.
      As I said in intro, until I see better ones, the best comps will remain to be Reinhart and Buchnevich.

      I picked Dallas and Chicago since they have players who fit the packages from the 1990s.
      Wyatt is Peca, Harley is Wilson, Strome is Zhamnov, Dach is Mills.

      (also, telling that Wild fans hate it as much as Chicago & Dallas fans)

      When someone justifies their position using some sort of comparable instead of "But he's guddddd!", it's so much easier to have a solid conversation about it.

      Curious as to what you mean by Kessel having less control in the process? He was an RFA as well, and I *feel* like he had arbitration rights? To me, the big snag on a Fiala deal is likely the fact that Minny has cap issues already, though that could be solved by simply moving Dumba (Which also might not be the right direction...).

      Kessel was coming off his ELC so no arb rights. Fiala could be 1-year from UFA, either by QO or via arbitration.

      yeah i remember reading about it.... offersheet were quite something back then. i also like the ridiculous federov offersheet wih the ridiculous stanleycup winning bonus

      That was Lou is his heyday. Of the 1989 team, 9-of-the-10 top scorers from that team were gone by end of 1991.

      Muller for Richer
      Verbeek for Turgeon for Lemieux
      Kruvers for Niedermayer
      Shanahan for Stevens
      Crowder for McKay

      Drafted Brodeur, Guerin, Rolston, Zelepukin

      All between 1989-1991

      Once Marty arrived, dealt his two goalies for some grit (Billington for Peluso, Burke for Holik)

      And the rest is history.

      I love me some Fiala, but our two most valuable prospects and a first isn’t happening. Johnston just got done massacring the OHL and Harley is coming along nicely as a soon to be top four D. Centers and D > wingers all day long. I’d rather keep our assets and grab a free agent if the asking price is that high
