What if Leafs could grab Oettinger

Created by: Ottawasean
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 1, 2022
Published: Jun. 1, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
No, I don't know that Jake Oettinger is available. But Dallas is at a point that if Klingberg leaves they won't be competitive. A few aging players and repeatedly injured stars means maybe they are willing to rebuild. Nylander is a big price to pay but number one goalies are hard to come by.

Leafs are able to prioritize resigning FAs that were impactful while addressing part of the issues in goal.

Leafs pick up Patrick as Vegas sheds contracts and see is Tavares can get him scoring (if not, Kerfoot moves up to second line).

Third line strong but fourth is not.

No D replacements on some aging and injury prone guys.

How far off am I?

Stars easily declines, Nylander is of no need and Oettinger is of HUGE need. It's an easy rejection, plus we're taking Mrazek as a cap dump, just makes it easier to say no.

Trading Otter resets the re-build by another 5 years or more.

So you’re saying if Klingberg leaves they’re screwed, so to fix that they trade away the only thing keeping them in that first round series against Calgary for a streaky one dimensional forward?

Oettinger is untouchable.
He will be the franchise goalie for many years to come.

Wow, the Leafs absolute rob Dallas......absolutely no way Dallas does that trade
But that Seattle and Vegas are really bad for the Leafs.

so Dallas trades their young starting goalie who carried them to game 7 because a UFA defenseman is leaving? Is this a joke? Also you are fleecing yourself in the Vegas and Seattle trades

Such as small complaint to your reply but IMO another Nylander type player is exactly what the stars need

Not by giving up our number goalie. Otter is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more needed than Nylander, except Miro, he’s the most valuable part of our team.

At most I’d give up for Nyalnder would be Gurianov, Dellandrea and a 1st.

This is one of the worst pieces of logic ever on this site and that’s saying something..klingberg leaving is the reason the stars need to go into a rebuild lol?!?

Even if that were accurate, why would you trade you’re young, team controlled, phenomenal goalie for a forward?! There’s a ton in FA they could just go out and get.

Truly an amazing post - good job

Well, appreciate some of the posts.

Not sure a one year success is a franchise goalie (see Dubnyk, Dipeitro, Lack, Schneider). And looking at Dallas, they are either headed towards a retooling or a full rebuild that will take them likely through most of Oettinger's prime. But maybe Nylander and a late first isn't enough to compensate for the fan base.

D wins championships. Every year. Elite goalie and good D are essential. I don't see Heiskanen can provide the kind of D that offsets the rest. (Look at Reilly and TO D).

Retooling is a challenge with Benn and Pavelski aging out, a decent but not elite D, young scorers but challenging depth. Retool put them 2 years from contention in my estimate.

If Dallas retools, they can move Seguin, Benn, Pavelski, Oettinger for top young talent to rebuild. But that just my amateur assessment

VGK doesn’t rip teams off since they were allowed to during the expansion draft. They decline this trade.

Honestly, if they got like a fourth for Patrick alone, they’d accept.
