You're missing Pittsburghs first rounder in that Petry trade

Devils decline, they’ll try to move Tatar to open a roster space, this deal doesn’t accomplish that and Hoffman has an extra year on his deal.

Lol there isn't a single stat that says he is a liability and he just put up 21 points in the last 29 games. He had a bad 30 game stretch out of the last four seasons and now people think he doesn't have value. He will get a good return this off season, people can doubt it on this site all they want but I have been on here long enought to hear that same thought for Pacioretty, Chairot, Toffoli and Lehkonen so I'll stick with my opinion until proven wrong

guy we all watched the same season here Petry is just not good anymore. even if he was that contract doesn't expire until he's 38 years old, if 34-year-old Petry is overpaid 38-year-old Petry is gonna be a nightmare. it's worth whatever nominal extra value you could squeeze out to just dump him now, we need room for Barron on the right side anyway, somebody needs to go and Petry is fetching more than Savard, Clague or Wideman.

6.4 million for a 40 point 23 minute a night top 4 RHD is pretty much standard.

He was literally our best dman and put up solid numbers. 21 points in the last 29 games, best 5 on 5 analytics on the team and played both PP and PK.

And he isn't overpaid, is he old? For sure but he can still play 20+ a night and put up solid numbers that are well worth the 6.5 million. Until his skating goes he will be a good dman got whatever team coughs up the assets to get him.

This. I'd rather have the caproom next year even if there is a very slight marginal difference this year.

Except he's getting paid that until he's 37/38. There are no signs as to him sustaining that pace, and no one is taking on that contract.

Except there are more teams looking for top 4 RHDs than there are top 4 RHDs on the market. They can go on and sign Klingberg in FA to a contract that will age much worse than Petry's.

People in general think it's easy to just trade for Weegar, Carlo, Marino, Cernak to fix their RD, but thing is RHDs of that caliber on perfect contracts are never traded - they're drafted and kept till FA or until the team is forced to trade them cap-wise.

Actually there are signs of him maintaining that pace and no signs of him declining. You're basically assuming he will just be getting worst without any evidence

It might age worse, but at least that team will be getting the prime years of that player, while you're trading the player in his twilight years.

Except Petry is the better defender right now and that's what contending teams want.
