Detroit, Montreal and New York likely pass, doesn't really make sense for any of them.

Definitely one of the better JP trade scenarios I've found. I'll explore this in my own ACGM thanks!

Canes are going to need someone to run their PP and it won't be Tony D because the canes won't pay him the salary will will get during arb. So they better have a back up plan.

Why won't montreal keep Petry? Also so many Detroit fans are going to be sad when Stevie Y trades for an expensive Vet dmen. It might not be schmidt but its going to happen.

Montreal's rebuilding, Petry wanted out (probably more willing to stay now) and Petry still has value as top pair D-man. If Petry is moved though it will be to the US and certainly not Winnpeg. Montreal also isn't going to retain on him if that's the return.

Yzerman probably will bring in a veteran D-man, but he's not going to pay that price for Schmidt.

For a 3rd Schmidt to Detroit makes sense.

Definitely.

He's no. 1 on my list of players to be paired with Seider next season. He's good enough to hold that spot for a year or two until the kids mature and he's good enough to QB our 2nd PP. He also plays both sides in case either Seider or Hronek gets injured.

There won't be much of a market for an older dmen that has 3 yrs left at over 6mil. Very few teams that can complete could take him on and he's not waiving to go to a bad team. The canadians will not get value for him.

I like Pionk but Canes could just keep TDA on a 3x5 deal and not trade Drury.

Its not about getting value, its about getting a reasonable return. I'm not even expecting something to the level of the Ellis return, even if Petry can still play at a very high level and his term is not as onerous as Ellis'. But Montreal will just keep him if they have to retain on him just to get a late 2nd and a stay at home D-prospect that they don't really have room for.

Improve on Sandberg or make that 2nd a 1st and that would be fair value for Petry

Ellis was at the time of his trade 4 yrs younger than Petry is now. Thats a massive gap. So Ellis will actually be younger by 2yrs when his contract ends than Petry will.

TDA is a 26 yr old dmen that over the last 3 NHL seasons has a scoring pace of over 60 points per 82 games why would he settle for that contract? Oh and if he goes to Arb we will get much much more than 5mil.

He also had 6 years left on his contract compared to 3 for Petry now. That's the much more important gap. Petry is already a D-man that has defied the aging curve, having his best season at 33. His game is the kind that ages well.

I won't pretend to guess what he'd get in arb or what he's looking for in a contract. He's a pretty unique situation given his ability paired with his on/off ice issues historically. Don't think that will be discounted league-wide.

His comments at end of season were that he's an extremely loyal person and he really respects and appreciates Dundon, GMDW & especially RBA and wants to do whatever he can to stay in CAR. I think he'd take a slight discount to stay given he's in a pretty great situation for a guy like him. Not saying he should stay if he gets way more on the open market but I just don't think the offers that normally would be there for a player of his caliber will be there for him.

They'll use Bear if TDA leaves, he doesn't fit in carolina because he won't get pp time or top 4 but if TDA is not there then Bear will
