Description
Really thought the JP for Appleton+Stanley deal filled some needs for us

Needed better defending/grit/intensity from the rest of the forward group and I really think McGinn, Appleton, Eakin provide just that.

Kulak has been an unbelievable fit, need him to take a bit of a hometown discount here.

I keep seeing Husso proposals, hopefully this is enough to sign him.

14.37M for next year and the only real question marks are:
1. How fast can we sign Bouchard to an 8yr extension somewhere in the 4-6 range (a la Klefbom) before we screw it up like we did Nurse (who is great, but is overpaid by ~2M)
2. Is Skinner ready for tandem-time, and if so I hope he signs for a reasonable amount.
3. Niemo/Stanley earmarked as Keith replacements, hopefully Stanley sticks for a reasonable amount too.

No from Winnipeg. JP hasn't shown anything to be worth that much. At a reasonable cost he'd be worth a look though.

      Was Stanley the deal breaker?
Really only want Appleton+ in this scenario

I would rather keep jesse and I think the jets would rather keep their players here the trade isn't bad at all it's just both teams are probably better off with keeping their own respective players

As a fellow Oilers fan, I ask that you rescind this entire post halo Please.

1.) You give up 2 3rds to swap Kassian for McGinn, who isn't much better and also has an extra year on his contract.
2.) That Puljujarvi trade does nothing for me; you must have a LOT of faith in Appleton or think very little of Jesse.
      3.) What about Appleton's play warrants 2.75mil?
4.) You repeat the Turris mistake by committing 1.75mil to a worn-out and fading Cody Eakin for 2 years.

      Also, EDM won't get a 2nd for Barrie. Likely looking at a 3rd or a 4th.

I think the Jets would only do picks for him. Winnipeg spent a pick to bring Appleton back at the TDL, so it's unlikely they move him out again.

The idea would be for the Jets to add depth, not just shuffle pieces around.

It was a bit tough to come to this conclusion for me, personally.

First off Kassian. Just doesn't seem to be the same player after smashing his head on the ice. Very wishy-washy, if he's on he's decent, when he's off he's completely invisible. McGinn just cause he's a decently hard worker on the ice. I think we're missing that on the bottom 6.

JP's underlying fancies indicate a phenomenal defensive player yet the eye-test especially in the playoffs left a lot to be desired.
Out there it was more Bambi-On-Ice than Forechecker-Supreme.
I love JP, but I'm afraid if we fall in love with the player or his stats rather than what we see on the ice, it's not gonna end well.
Further to this, I see a TON of ACGM's either simply offer-sheeting him or trading peanuts for him.
I don't think we can afford both Yamo AND JP long term either.

So I came to the conclusion that trading him away to fill needs (an actual bottom 6 guy instead of asking a top 6 type to do bottom 6 things like the whole Yakupov debacle) would be the best way forward.
I did, after considering your post heavily, think that I undervalued JP. This is a more than fair trade for JP all things considered (us losing).

Far as Appleton's salary, I perceive him like Foegele. Decent checker, 10-ish goals, 20ish points. If 2.75M is the going rate, that's the going rate.

Onto Eakin, just need another good faceoff guy. That's really it. Could offer him less, but yeah.

Agree with all 4 of your points. But not your postscript. Perennial 50 point defensemen don't grow on trees, and nobody else with Barrie's level of offense year after year gets paid as little as he does.

I think EDM's cap situation will diminish the value that he would otherwise have. We can agree to disagree on this, though.

I don't think it would. They have other ways of gaining cap space, they don't HAVE to move Barrie. And there will be a bunch of teams interested, which will keep the price from falling.

I also disagree with the way you've framed this. While they have other ways to free up cap space, they don't have many that will cleanly free up a large sum without costing a significant asset. Kassian likely costs a 2nd to move, Foegele maybe returns a LOW pick (but I'd rather keep him), and we'd have to hope that Keith or Smith choose to retire or LITRetire.

Maybe there are a bunch of teams with interest or maybe there are just a couple. Who's to say? I don't recall him being a hot asset on the UFA market a couple years ago so I doubt that'd change now. I think his value will be tied closely to the UFA bidding markets for Klingberg. If a contending team goes after Klingberg and loses out on him, I can see them falling back to Barrie if they think that's a key piece they'll need.
