The reason we want Pettersson is that he's the perfect partner for Hronek. He's absolutely rock solid defensively and he's a great puckhandler which is Hronek's weakest area. Pairing him with Hronek will give Hronek options to offload breakout passes to him and his puckhandling skills will give Hronek much more time when he does have the puck and we won't have to watch him panic and give the puck away or wire it along the boards to the nearest opponent anywhere near as much as we do today.
Walman isn't good defensively at all, he has 1.90 giveaways per 60 compared with 0.74 for Pettersson, takeaways are 0.72 for Walman and 0.90 for Pettersson, hits are 4.69 for Walman and 6.49 for Pettersson. Pettersson is better in every single defensive metric except shot blocks and he scores almost twice as much too 1.01 points per 60 versus 0.62 for Walman.
Three years is no problem at all for Detroit, Pettersson is young and will have trade value in case our prospects should become good enough to oust him. With the cap increasing and Detroit's ability to retain salary we'll get more than what we paid.
This trade here is nonsense though. A fair price for Pettersson is a 3rd round pick considering PIT's cap situation.
Pettersson and Hronek could form a good pair, but i can´t agree with the "Walman isn´t good defensively at all". You haven´t watched him play if you say that. Walman has all the tools what Yzerman wants in a player as well. Don´t think he was just a throw in, when Stevie has scouted him since his AHL days.
Somebody who don´t get criticism at all, is Jordan Oesterle. That dude is just so bad defensively that he played as a forward at some points, but still people have him over Walman or even Staal in lineup.
Big question marks for me is that, can Pettersson play at the same level in Detroit than he did in a good team like Penguins? If not. What do we do with him then? Buyout, Cap dumb where we lose picks? What if Edvinsson, Johansson, Wallinder or somebody else from the many prospects are ready sooner than we think?
I just think 3 years for an okay defenceman is not a smart move. I would much rather go after a big name that could have a long future with the team.
But i respect your opinion
