Yeah Isles definitely add a lot. If Colorado decides to move Girard and let Kuemper go, they’ll be probably looking for Varlamov (50% retained) + 2022 1st from the Isles and maybe a sweetener on top (Bellows?)

if colorado goes after varly it would be for a late pick. They won't be trading girard for one year of varly, it doesn't make any sense.

Its def not that much for Girard. He’s kinda injury prone and wasn’t great last year

He wasn’t great no but his value is far higher than a rental goalie who’s not exactly a youngling. They aren’t gonna trade Girard for Varlamov and a depth piece unless Sakic gets replaced by Chiarelli

Colorado gave up a 1st a 3rd for one year of Kuemper with retention. So assuming Varlymov for one year with retention has similar value you're saying Girard is worth two 1sts, one 3rd and a sweetener?

I can’t see it I think if the Islanders wanted Girard it would have to be Beauviller and a pick

Darcy Kuemper in 2020-21: 27 GP, .907 SV%, 2.56 GAA, -0.6 GSAA. Colorado gave up a 1st & Connor Timmins to get Kuemper with retention down to a $3.5M cap hit.

Semyon Varlamov in 2021-22: 32 GP, .912 SV%, 2.88 GAA, 4.7 GSAA. At the *very least* you have to say that if the Isles retain him down to the same cap hit, it would not be insane for the Avs to expect to pay a 1st and a solid prospect in return. To say that they'd have to throw in #13 OA is basically saying that you think Girard would be worth two 1st rounders and a solid prospect. I think I'd pass at that price.

2 1sts for Girard is very fair considering how the NHL works nowadays. Worse players have costed 1sts as rentals, and Girard is both young and has term. Bellows is not a solid prospect anymore either if I’m being honest, wouldn’t be shocked if he was a waiver guy next year

What? Girard played 231 consecutive games for the Avs until he got COVID. And after that he’s had like 2 injuries in his career, one of which was this weird sternum injury from a huge hit and the other was a leg tweak. He’s not injury prone, he had the team’s iron man streak for a while. And he was excellent this season playing big minutes.

This trade is a big pass for the Avs. Better off just paying for another goalie on the open market.

Big difference is that last year COL was left holding the bag with Grubauer, and Kuemper was quite literally the only good goalie option left at the last possible minute. Not that the goalie market is crazy saturated this year, but if COL can't make things work with Kuemper I assume they will at least know that well ahead of time and will be able to actually plan something and not panic like last year. Maybe 13OA, but something like next year's first would have to go back to Colorado in a swap. Girard is a very good player

I'd honestly say the only way I see this deal happening is if something happens like last summer - Kuemper shocks everyone and signs for big money somewhere else and August rolls around and Colorado loses the game of musical chairs. Lou has been pretty open about not feeling a strong need to flip Varlamov and is fine going into next year with him as the backup to Sorokin, so I don't think he'd be super aggressive about pursuing a deal - he'll let it come to him.

I think there's a framework here, for sure, I just don't see a scenario where the Isles retain *and* send out a 1st with Varlamov. Just too big a price for that.

This would be like me saying Ryan Pulock is injury prone because he got hurt this year. Terrible take
